

Belton Norman Hughes, 82, passed into the hands of the Lord on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. He was born in Stephenville, Texas on September 29th, 1928 to Joseph Alvin Hughes and Vera Watson Hughes. He grew up in Ft. Worth graduating from Paschal High School playing on the 1945 State Championship Basketball Team.
He attended Texas Christian University graduating with a BS Degree in 1952 and earning an ME Degree in 1955. While at TCU he met and married Dorothy Phillips, the love of his life. Norman earned the title of a TCU Letterman enjoying his experience on the TCU Horned Frog Football Team as a team captain in the 1952 Cotton Bowl.
He coached and taught at Cleburne High School (Cleburne, Texas) from 1952 to 1957. He coached at Irving High School (Irving, Texas) from 1957 to 1958, served as Junior High Principal (Irving) from 1958 to 1962, and subsequently served as Principal of Irving High School from 1962 to 1967.
Norman moved the family to Houston in 1967 becoming a textbook sales representative for Holt, Reinhart & Winston (CBS Publishing) from 1967 to 1987. While in Houston the family attended Memorial Church of Christ and helped to establish the Fleetwood Congregation in 1976. Norman served as an Elder of the Lord’s Church at Fleetwood for 31 years.
Norman and Dorothy just celebrated 60 years of marriage this past June 1st. This celebration included a long weekend at Lake LBJ with the entire family.
Norman is survived by his wife Dorothy, two sons; Geary and his wife Rhonda, and Greg and his wife Sandra; three grandchildren, Michael, Morgan and his wife Amy, and Marshall. He is also survived by his brother Bobby Hughes of Ft. Worth and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother. He was always surrounded with love from within the church sharing the Lord’s love with family, friends, and all his brothers and sisters in Christ.
Following this memorial a graveside service will follow for the immediate family at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. At his request any remembrances should be made to the Gospel Broadcasting Network, 3969 Cloud Spring Dr., Ringgold, Georgia 30736 and its production “Good News Today” with Jim Dearman, an evangelistic outreach of the Church of Christ.
