Matthew was born and raised in Houston where he attended the First Presbyterian School until 8th grade, then on to Episcopal High School, ultimately graduating from Crossroads Academy in Utah. He was actively pursuing a degree in finance at the University of St. Thomas. The flexibility of the online program allowed Matthew to move to Aspen, Colorado, where he was working in hospitality at the Little Nell.
Matthew always had a love for numbers and recently completed an internship at the Fitzpatrick Group.
Matthew was a fun loving, silly, kind and compassionate child. He had a zeal for life and an abundance of energy. People liked to say he was “all gas no brakes.” Some favorite childhood memories include riding bikes with his siblings and friends, hanging out at the baseball fields, eating snow cones after games, Christmas tree forts and wild air soft wars.
He was actively involved in youth group at First Presbyterian where his time was spent on fellowship, mission trips, retreats and numerous ski trips. Matthew loved giving back to his community and had a huge heart. He would have taken the shirt off his back and given it to anyone who needed it.
Matthew greatly enjoyed playing football and baseball throughout his life. He was happiest playing team sports because of the camaraderie and bonding with his teammates. Some of his favorite memories include going to Cooperstown to play baseball, visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame and when his Episcopal High School football team won the SPC High School State Championship. The highlight of them all was when his Select baseball team, the Drillers, won the USSSA World Series. Matthew was affectionately known as “pig pen” by his teammates.
Above all, the time Matthew spent with his immediate family was what he cherished the most. He loved playing video games and often made his younger brother, Charles, sneak upstairs where they played X Box all night long. As the morning sun was rising in the sky, Matthew would graciously offer Charles the controller at 6:00 am. Matthew and his sister, Alexandra, created special memories in Aspen where they would hike, shop, watch football and eat out. She remembers with fondness how they “ate their way through Aspen.” Matthew and his mother, Christy, loved nothing more than a competitive tennis match against each other. Matthew would joke that he loved to drop shot her because she was “old.” He loved talking to his dad about the financial markets, business interests, mentorship and life advice. Matthew’s biggest dream was to be in business with his dad one day.
Matthew was preceded in death by both of his grandfathers, Bill Galtney and Charles Berry; and his uncle, Bob Galtney. He is survived by his parents, Matt and Christy Galtney; his sister, Alexandra; and brother, Charles Galtney; his grandmothers, Gloria Galtney and Louise Berry; Uncle Will Galtney (Elizabeth); Aunt Ginny Galtney (Stephanie); Uncle Ed Galtney (Betsy); Aunt Susanne Galtney; Aunt Courtney McCabe (Chris); Aunt Cydney Padon (Matthew); eighteen first-cousins who loved him dearly.
