Patrick F. Johnson was born in Fay, Oklahoma, February 9, 1944, the son of Fred and Isabel Johnson. He had one sister, Mary. Pat excelled at sports in high school, and attended The University of Oklahoma on a baseball scholarship.
As a young man, Pat had two loves, sports and coin collecting. When he graduated from college he received an offer to play Minor League baseball, but chose instead to become a dealer in rare coins. He moved to Houston, Texas in 1965 and established Houston Numismatic Exchange.
Within a year he met the true love of his life, Sylvia Aguilar. Pat and Sylvia were married in Mexico City on August 2, 1966. They had two sons, Jeff, born in 1967, and Jay, born in 1970.
Through hard work and fair, honest business practices Pat and Sylvia developed H.N.E into a major firm in numismatics. It is still in operation today, one of the largest rare coin firms in the Southwest.
Pat is survived by his wife, Sylvia, his son Jeff, his son Jay and wife Jennifer, his grandson Ryan and his granddaughter Amy, all of them of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his mother, Isabel Gates of Cherokee, Oklahoma, his sister Mary Antonucci and her husband Mark, of San Jose, California, three sisters-in-law, Theresa Fragosa, Alma Crump, and Susana Aguilar, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Pat will be missed by his family, his employees, and his many friends inside and out of the coin business. He personified the American success story, where hard work and fair play lead to financial success, and his intelligence and sense of humor made him loved by all of his family and friends. He was kind, thoughtful, and endearing to the end.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday, July 29, 2011 at Earthman Funeral Directors. A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 30, 2011 in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors. Interment to follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
