Paula Sue Tidemann, age 79, passed away on December 23rd at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas after a fall. She is survived by cousins on both sides of the family.
Paula, known to her family as Tina, was born in Houston and lived most of her life there. After graduating from Lamar High School, she graduated from Greenbrier College in Lewisburg, VA. Paula loved animals, and had both dogs and cats as pets over the years. As a child, she raised long-haired dachshunds, and one of these was a successful champion show dog named Indian War Chant (“Chant”). She also loved horses and, as a teenager, participated in English riding competitions.
Unfortunately, Paula was beset by a number of health issues during her life, requiring her to live in various assisted living facilities following the death of her parents. The last 15 years of her life were spent at Atria Westchase where the staff and residents became her family. She loved them and she fully enjoyed life at Atria. Paula never let her disabilities stop her from learning something new, and she even learned to make baby hats in the knitting class although her hands were crippled with arthritis. She loved music, happy hour, and all kinds of social events; she loved socializing with her friends and going on lunch outings with them. According to the staff at Atria, Paula was a bingo fanatic, and made it a point to attend nearly every bingo game while she lived there. She also liked to play Mahjong, Scrabble, and Pictionary. Most of all, she loved reading books. She was a voracious reader and a lifelong learner.
Paula will be remembered as an outgoing, friendly, kind and courageous woman who overcame numerous obstacles to remain largely independent in spite of physical challenges. She was blessed with a good, clear mind, and her friends enjoyed her lively intellect, personality and wisdom.
A memorial service will be held at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 27th. Paula will be buried at Glenwood Cemetery alongside her parents and her maternal grandparents and great-grandparents. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff and residents of Atria Westchase for their years of love, support and kindness to Paula, and they also want to extend their
gratitude to the Brookdale Hospice nurses and other team members for their loving care of her for several years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church or to one’s choice of charity.
