Pearl Mitchell Johnson went home to be with the Lord in Conroe, Texas on November 23, 2025. Pearl was born January 22, 1927 to Josh Mitchell and Martha Anne Robinson Mitchell in Charleston, South Carolina. At 4 years old, Pearl was uprooted from her family and moved to Philadelphia where she was introduced to singing in the children’s choir and attending all day services at Rising Sun Baptist Church. At 14 years old Pearl had a spiritual encounter and was baptized by the late Rev. C. Brown. While at Rising Sun, Pearl attended Tuesday night prayer meetings, ushered and sang in the junior choir. Pearl loved to sing.
On October 08, 1949, Pearl married Nelson Johnson and to this union two children were born, Cornell and Wendy Ann. They were the pride and joy of her life. Pearl became a devoted wife and homemaker. On January 06, 1965, Pearl moved her membership to Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, under the late Rev. Walter C. Wynn. Pearl was very active in the Usher Board, Mission, and the Senior Choir. Pearl sang for over 50 years at Taylor Memorial until her voice began to fail. Pearl was such a devoted soprano singer that she even sung many Lou Rawls songs in her soprano voice. “You’ll Never Find,” was one of her favorites.
Pearl wanted to be near her grandchildren, so she relocated to Houston, Texas on October 14, 2002, where she moved her membership to Second Cavalcade Missionary Baptist Church under the late Rev. Marvin L. Anderson. Pearl was a devoted member and mother of the church. Upon Pastor Anderson’s passing, she moved her membership to Greater Pure Light Church on April 1, 2007 under Pastor Darryl Broussard. At Greater, Pearl served on the Hospitality Ministry until January 08, 2012 when her health began to fail and she relocated to Conroe, Texas. Pearl continued to study and practice the Word of God at Shades of Grace under Elder Rickey Williams, Sr until the Lord called her home.
Anyone who met Ms. Pearl knew she was a little lady that loved to eat. Her son-in-law nicknamed her “big greedy”, to which she replied, “you big greedy” their banter was always present. Pearl also loved to travel to see her brother and sister-in-law in California and she loved to cruise. Pearl’s warm waves and affectionate smile will be truly missed. At 98, the Lord has called His faithful servant home to rest.
She is survived by her 2 children – Wendy Ann Williams (Rickey Ray Williams Sr.) and Cornell Johnson, two brothers – Leonard Jarvis (Delois) of Lancaster, California and George Jones Jr. of Albany, New York. 2 grandchildren – Rickey R.
