Those who knew PehHwua would agree without hesitation that she was one of the most generous and selfless people in the world. Her kindness defined her, but her life was also marked by remarkable achievements that many may not fully know.
Born and raised in the countryside of Taiwan, PehHwua was one of nine children. With limited resources, her family could not afford to send her to higher education. Even as a young girl, she took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings, often supporting them both physically and financially. Her nurturing spirit became a defining quality throughout her life.
After completing trade school, PehHwua discovered a gift for teaching. She soon began training young women in domestic skills and crafts, helping them provide for their families and gain greater independence. Her dedication and impact did not go unnoticed.
In 1965, Taiwan honored ten of the most influential individuals shaping the future of Taiwanese women. Among them was PehHwua. She was celebrated at a national reception where she was honored with a dinner and had the privilege of meeting Madame Chiang Kai-shek and her son, who would later become President of Taiwan.
Seeking a brighter future for their children, PehHwua and her husband, David, made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States. Together, they worked tirelessly in the motel business, building a foundation for a new life in a new country. Their sacrifices and determination bore fruit: both of their children completed medical school without debt, a testament to their parents’ hard work and devotion.
During their years in San Antonio, PehHwua extended her generosity far beyond her immediate family. She was instrumental in bringing many of her siblings and their families to the United States, welcoming them into her home and supporting them financially as they pursued residency. Through her efforts, many families were able to build new lives in America, and her influence opened doors of opportunity for future generations.
After retiring from the motel business, PehHwua devoted herself to her grandchildren, traveling frequently between Houston and other cities to care for them. She eagerly assumed the responsibility of raising the grandchildren whenever her own children called for help. Although she never learned to drive, PehHwua remained independent and adventurous, often taking the Greyhound bus to visit her children and grandchildren.
As many may already know, PehHwua enjoyed cooking and eating with her family and friends. She had an amazing talent of creating delicious dishes in amazing time. Her creativity and improvisation in cooking allowed her to utilize any ordinary ingredients that were available and turned them into extraordinary delights. Never had anyone seen her cook from a cook book. Her dishes did not have a traditional name but it was always delicious. PehHwua also enjoyed gardening. It reflected her nurturing quality and her unwavering optimism. She genuinely believed that any plant can thrive and become more beautiful with nourishment and love, just like people.
After the passing of her husband early in their retirement years, she carried on with grace and resilience. Her courage and optimism guided her through life’s challenges. She was a devout Christian whose faith anchored her throughout her life. While her travels sometimes kept her from attending church regularly, she never wavered in her devotion. She found fellowship and joy in a wide circle of friends, meeting often to share meals, conversation, and laughter.
PerHwua’s life was one of sacrifice, perseverance, generosity, and love. She leaves behind a legacy not only in her children and grandchildren but also in the many lives she touched and uplifted through her kindness and strength.
PehHwua is survived by Marian (Wilbur) and Jackson (Gina). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Morgan (Cameron Bishop), Cameron, Matthew and Cassidy.
Honoring her request, a funeral service will not be held.
