

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Richard “Dick” Allan Ambrus on Monday the 20th of January 2025. Dick was born on the 1st of June 1943 in San Antonio, TX to Sandor and Frances Matheny Ambrus.
Dick attended St. Gerard’s Catholic School in San Antonio for grades 1-12. Following graduation, he served his country in the Marine Corps from 1961-1965. Dick graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1974 and then went to work for the state comptroller’s office. His business career included positions with Alexander Grant (now Grant Thornton), North Houston Pole Line, and for the past forty years, Glenwood Cemetery, where he served as executive director, and retired from in December of 2023.
Dick also served the city of Jersey Village in several capacities, including positions on the Planning and Zoning Committee, City Council, and as Mayor. He also held the position of President of the Texas Cemetery Association from 2018-2019.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years Bonnie Kay; his sons David Michael (Whitney), Scott Allan (Sarah), and Jeffrey Ryan (Jessica); his grandchildren Ryan David, Natalie Ann, and Isabella Marie; and his niece and nephews Tracy Arriola, Alex Ambrus, Keith Bornemann, Brett Bornemann, and Chad McCarty. Dick is predeceased by his father, Sandor, his mother Frances, his sister Marion, and his brother, Sandy.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 27th of January, in the Jasek Chapel and Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston, where the recitation of the Holy Rosary is to commence at six o’clock in the evening.
Mass of Christian Burial is to be offered at half past ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, the 28th of January at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Road in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Basil Hall at the church.
(Kindly Note: Parking for the funeral service will be located in the St. Anne’s Catholic Church parking garage, which may be accessed off Westheimer Road and Kingston Drive, traffic control officers will be positioned so as to direct attendees).
The Rite of Committal is to follow, via an escorted cortege, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers during Tuesday’s service are, David Ambrus, Scott Ambrus, Jeffrey Ambrus, Ryan Ambrus, Doug Bornemann, Michael Spiro Pappas.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to Glenwood Cemetery Historic Preservation Foundation, 2525 Washington Ave. Houston, TX 77007.
In the end, he would say “My friend, I’ll say it loud and clear: I lived a life that’s full…and more than that - I did it my way!”
