Richard W. Denney Sr., devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, irrepressible Aggie (class of 1949), servant of our Lord, dedicated and talented engineer, passed away suddenly late in the evening of January 2, 2021. He had not been ill, and was watching his beloved Aggies play their final game of the season.

As an engineer, he worked in manufacturing, sales, management, and consulting well into his 80’s, and set an example of work ethic few around him could match. He received his engineering degree from Texas A&M in 1950, and then added a master’s degree from the University of Houston. He was a leader within the Houston Materials Handling Society, and designed materials handling systems ranging from belt conveyors to oil platform machine handling systems, with his work in use all over the world.

Dick was a committed servant of our Lord, having attended the Bethel Church since 1963, where he served as deacon and elder for many decades. He taught Sunday school to a generation of fifth graders, and led the missions program at Bethel for many years, among many other duties.

He served in the U.S. Army Security Agency during the Korean conflict as an officer on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Straits of Alaska.

During his time at Texas A&M, he earned the rank of Captain in the Corps of Cadets and commanding officer of his Signal Corps company. He forged friendships there that have lasted to this day, and the ranks of that company, already diminished, are left with yet another gap that can’t be filled.

As a husband and father, he led by example and with clarity and devotion. He leaves behind his inseparable wife of 65 years, Jo Ann, daughter Denise Patronik and her husband Frank, son Richard Jr. and his wife Karla, granddaughters Emily Klepinger and husband Alexander,Elizabeth Patronik, and many nieces and nephews.

¿TIENE UN RECUERDO O UNA CONDOLENCIA QUE AÑADIR?

AÑADIR UN RECUERDO

Like so many other Bethel missionaries I will always be grateful to the Lord for Dick's unswerving commitment to world missions. He was always ready with a smile and an encouraging word for us. Seeing Dick whenever we would visit Bethel was an unfailing reminder that Bethel was standing with us on the mission field. I have no doubt that an entire generation of Bethel missionaries would echo my words and add better ones. "Well done good and faithful servant of Jesus!" You made a difference around the world. Very few people can say that.

On this occasion my sister Hazel and I reflect on our friendship, and especially our late parents’ cherished friendship with “Dick and Joann” that endured for many years of our parents’ lives. We both remember Mr. Denney’s courtesy, confidence, sincerity, intelligence, and sense of humor. He was notably nice and respectful to us in our youth. Hazel remembers how he helped her understand some math concepts for school. And I will always remember Mr. Denney asking to see me during one of his visits at the Texas A&M campus in 1973. We sat at a table in the Memorial Student Center. He became my on-the-spot counselor when I let it slip that I was struggling academically. Mr. Denney encouraged and lifted me with optimism, encouragement, and a few practical suggestions. Rick, the eulogy for your dad was wonderful.

I have many fond memories of serving with Dick on the missions committee at Bethel. Whenever he wasnted us to make a generous contribution to a ministry or missions partner, he would say, "I think we should hit 'em a pretty good lick." That phrase has become part of my own way of expressing myself. Wonderful man--what a privilege it was to get to know him and to see his humble love for Jesus and for missions.

Uncle Dick was such a fun loving and handsome man. I remember as a little kid standing on his feet as we walked around Grandma's house and then he would carry me to bed on his shoulders. At his wedding to Aunt JoAnn, I thought they were the most beautiful couple, and that has never changed. Having you at all of the family weddings, parties, and funerals always meant so much to me. I hope you and your siblings are having fun and will continue to watch over us until we meet again.

I first met Rick nearly 40 years ago, and met his parents some time after that. Rick's father was a jovial man who told good stories. I visited Rick's parents in Houston, and they stopped to visit me in Arlington.

Rick, I know that you miss your father, he was a truly nice man. I appreciate having known him.

When Rick asked me to marry him I had not yet met Dick and JoAnn Denney.. I was concerned about this for I was unable to see what type of family Rick came from and wondered how he would interact with his family. However seeing how good a person Rick is I decided to take a leap of faith and said yes to Rick. Thank goodness I did! Dick and JoAnn turned out to be the best in laws a person could ever have! Thank you for that and I will greatly miss you Dick until we all meet again in heaven.
