Dick grew up in Houston, Seabrook and Alvin, graduating from Alvin High School. Growing up, Dick was known as “Butch”, a nickname he gave to himself. To this day, family and many friends still refer to him by that name. After high school, Dick attended Texas A & M University for a semester, a proud member of the Corps of Cadets and the Aggie band. He transferred to North Texas University where he was a member of the R.O.T.C. and received a degree in music. He joined the Air Force as an OSI agent and spent 18 months of his tour in Korea. After leaving the service, Dick went to work for the Prudential Insurance Company where he met his wife, Diane Coons Mills. They were married on July 11, 1969 and were married for 47 years on the day Dick passed away. Later, Dick worked in real estate and property management for Olson and Associates and the Horne Company. He spent the past 35 years singing barbershop music, both with the Houston Tidelanders in the early years and with several quartets. In later life, Dick spent time taking care of rental property he and Diane owned and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dick and Diane attended Sugar Land Bible Church.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James Mills and half-brother, Grant Mills. He is survived by his wife, Diane; his children, Jennifer Martin and husband Benoit, Christopher Mills, and Kimberly Suckow and husband Chris.
