Richard W. Flowers, beloved Houston events maestro passed away on Friday, the 17th of April 2026, at the age of 75. He was born on the 3rd of March 1951, in San Antonio, Texas to Sara Hodge and Richard Wall Flowers.
Richard attended The University of Texas, where he was both a Sigma Phi Epsilon and a Silver Spur, graduating with a degree in Business. He began his career in the East Texas oilfields and later became a partner in an independent oil and gas exploration company in Houston.
While still in the energy business, he opened Cut Flowers a series of European-style flower shops. The turning point came in 1990, when Lynn Wyatt asked Richard to design the décor for the Houston Ballet Ball.
Richard expanded into the luxury event production industry and in 2003, he joined forces with Landry’s Inc. and founder Tilman Fertitta. The Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Rice University, Legacy Community Health, and The Houston Police Foundation were amongst those who placed their most important occasions in his hands.
In addition to work, Richard’s passions included UT Football, travel, studying and collecting Texas historical maps, four-legged furry creatures and his love for Mexican food.
Though never one to seek recognition, it found him. He served on the Board of Trustees of The Houston Ballet, the institution he loved above all others, quietly giving back to the organization whose stages he had transformed for more than three decades. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Youth Development Center.
When asked across a lifetime of extraordinary work which event was his favorite, Richard never named one. It was always the people.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Thomas “Tommy” Hodge Flowers.
Richard is survived by his beloved husband, Angel Rios, of Houston; his sister, Judy Flowers Dyess; and his cherished nieces and nephews, Seth Dyess, Wade Flowers, Kristin Lowther, and Ashley Flowers.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family during a Celebration of Richard’s Life from two o’clock until four o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, the 25th of April, in the Grand Ballroom of The Post Oak Hotel, 1600 West Loop South in Houston. Kindly note: In honor of Richard’s vibrant spirit please wear bright, festive colors.
The family will gather for a private interment and graveside service on Monday morning, the 27th of April, at the Wyatt Ranches Cemetery, located at the Tasajillo Division of Wyatt Ranches in Realitos, Duval County, Texas. South Texas was a place where Richard and Angel found solace and peace, and often visited Wyatt Ranches to relax and rejuvenate.
