Richard was born on October 2, 1946 to Mario and Erma Malfer. A few years later, his younger brother, Joseph, was born. The childhood of both boys involved constant travel owing to their father’s naval career. Following in his father’s military footsteps, Richard would have his own career in the military serving as an Army Ranger in the Vietnam War. He hadn’t forgotten his own childhood experiences and Richard did all he could to ensure that the constant travel for his own family wouldn’t happen. His education, not to be neglected, saw him matriculate from both Virginia Tech and Purdue University with a Master’s Degree in Education.
Richard was a man full of stories and jokes, showing off his wit, charm, and humor that many would attribute to him. Despite the ups and downs of life, he was a simple man, who preferred the comforts of home, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, and dogs. Richard was a hardworking man who did all for the welfare of his large family, often adding levity and humor when it was most needed. It was a common sight for friends and family to see Richard woodworking, raking the yard, working on the pond, or pursuing various passions that would suddenly grip him. His insights and advice were invaluable and helped with many monumental decisions for his entire family. His life was characterized by sacrifice, both for his country and his family as he helped his own children reach their own personal and professional goals. Sometimes, if you were lucky, you’d get to hear some of his favorite songs from his sizable record collection or see him show off his epic dance moves.
Richard was deeply loved by his family and dogs.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Laura.
