January 31, 1931 – April 17, 2025
Richard Scroggins, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025. Born in Houston and raised in Pinehurst, Texas, Richard lived a full and remarkable life defined by service, love, hard work, and deep faith.
At just 16 years old, Richard answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army on December 15, 1947. He trained at Fort Ord, California, and served at several posts including Fort Bragg, Fort Jackson, Fort Benning, and San Francisco. When President Truman extended the draft, Richard was deployed to Korea, where he bravely served 13 months in heavy combat under General Douglas MacArthur. He fought from South to North Korea and was awarded three Bronze Stars for his valor and commitment in three different task forces. He was honorably discharged on November 5, 1951, forever proud of the uniform he wore and the flag he defended.
After the military, Richard poured the same dedication into civilian life. He worked 13 years at Nabisco in the filler room, owned and operated the successful Suburban Club nightclub, and later ran a fleet of 18-wheeler rigs transporting steel across the country. Richard never shied away from hard work and always did so with determination and pride.
Richard’s heart was with his community. He was deeply involved in the VFW, where he and his beloved wife Ammie held elected positions and served side by side. He was also an active participant in the American Legion, always advocating for fellow veterans and their families.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary; his wife, Ammie; his brother, Harlan Wayne; and his sister, Joyce. He is survived by his loving sister Darlene; his devoted children, daughter Jennifer and son Billy Wayne; his cherished grandchildren Samantha (and her husband Josh), Dillon (and his wife Katie), Dalton (and his wife Kristina), and Wayne; great-grandchildren Cohen and Remi; daughter-in-law Natalie; and numerous nieces and nephews who all held a special place in his heart.
Richard had a passion for life that was contagious. He and Ammie loved dancing, always inviting others to join in on the fun—and insisting everyone come back to their house for breakfast afterward. He had a deep love for the water and spent countless days boating, skiing, and teaching his grandchildren to swim at Lake Conroe, where he became fondly known as “the ole man that drives the scooter and golf cart around.” Family gatherings for game days and dinners were his favorite—not because he played, but because he simply loved being surrounded by those he loved.
A man of profound faith, Richard served as an elder in his church, helped with communion, and even supported the transition to electronic music systems. In later years, he never missed a Sunday livestream, his faith unwavering until his final days.
Though we grieve his loss, we take comfort in knowing that Richard has been joyfully reunited with those who went before him. His legacy of love, courage, faith, and laughter lives on in each of us who had the privilege of knowing him. With his Maker is where he longed to be—and now, he is home.
