Rivers graduated from Sam Houston State University at the age of 19 and returned to Bedias in 1934 to teach her younger brother and sister in high school. In 1937 she left Bedias to come to Houston to begin her career with HISD. Beginning at Jeff Davis High School, then Bellaire High School and finally Westbury High School as Dean of Women until she retired in 1976.
She has been a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church for over 70 years. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma for over 79 years and Brae Burn Country Club for 73 years. She played golf and drove her car until she was 97. In July of 2012, she had a stroke.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harris “Tightwad” Lodge; her two brothers, Jim and Phil Harrison; and her only sister, Lucille Harrison Cole.
She is survived by her daughter, Edwina Lodge Chatham and her husband Stephen; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Chatham Scott and her husband Brad of Waurika, Oklahoma; grandson, Peyton Chatham and his wife Shaylene of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five great-grandchildren, Lodge and Houston Scott, and Ellyn, Kate and Harrison Chatham.
The family would like to thank Dr. Margit Winstrom for incredible care for over 30 years; her housekeeper, Gracie Gomez; her devoted caregivers, Cathy Juarez, Jeniffer Rosenber and Jocelynn Authorlee; the staff of Memorial Hermann Hospice; and the kind staff at Autumn Years Personal Care Home.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 30th of July, in the drawing room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The interment is to be conducted at one o’clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 31 of July, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston, where the Rev. Terry Thompson will officiate. A uniformed steward from Geo. H. Lewis & Sons will be positioned at the front gate of the frontage road entrance so as to guide attendees to the grave site.
A memorial service and celebration of life will follow at three o’clock in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, also officiated by the Rev. Terry Thompson.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in her name be directed to the George W.
