Robert A. McClain, Jr. was born in Keatchie, Louisiana, the second of four children to Rev. Robert A. McClain, Sr., and Emma “Penny” McClain. In his early years, the family moved to Houston, settling in what longtime residents fondly call Studewood, Texas. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School (HISD), where he dominated the football field as a fiercely competitive defensive player with a tackle that was delivered with vengeance.
Robert was a hardworking provider who held various occupations, always showing reliability and a strong work ethic. He spent over thirty years with the City of Houston, beginning as a water meter reader, earning him the nickname “Watermeter.” Through determination
and dedication, he advanced through the ranks and retired as a respected Supervisor in the City of Houston Public Works Department.
Jean L. Money became the love of Robert’s life, and together they built a partnership filled with love, laughter, and travel. They were blessed with two sons who brought them pride, joy, and purpose. Robert had a larger-than-life personality and a heart to match. He loved fishing, was a poker wizard, and was the master of the domino table. What truly set Robert apart was his quiet, steady presence as a father figure. Whether coaching little league football, teaching dominoes for the price of a gallon of water, or tagging that backside when needed, Robert gave his time and wisdom generously. He served as a parental presence for his brothers-in-law Bill and Michael Pines, stood as a steady example for childhood friends of his sons Kenny and Curtis Adams, forged a deep unbreakable bond with his nephew Stephon Jones, helped raise his younger cousin Louise McClain, and remained a guiding presence in the lives of Desmond (deceased) and Marion Jones.
He is now joyfully reunited with his beloved Jean, his parents, his brothers William and Curtis McClain, and a host of individuals who paved the way before him.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a brother, Cisrow McClain, Sr.; his sons, Robert A. McClain III (Felicia) and Kevin E. McClain, Sr. (Kimberly); his grandchildren, Kevin Jr., Kamron, and Zania McClain; great-grandchildren: Skylar and Kason McClain; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
On June 16, 2025, the Lord brought Robert to that heavenly sea and asked him to dock his boat on the shore of no more. No bait, rod, or reel were needed for this trip. All that he needed to do was to come unto the Father, where his reward is sweet rest.
