Rosa was born on September 13, 1952, in Monterrey, Mexico, to Gilberto Garza Hinojosa and Elisa Guzman de Garza. At the age of 15, her family relocated to the United States, where they made Houston, Texas, their home. Although Spanish was her first language, she quickly picked up English, making sure to adopt a bit of the Southern twang along the way.
Rosa had a profound love for music, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. Her unapologetic approach to life left a lasting impact on many. She was affectionately known as Mamá Rosa, Rose, and Rosy, while her grandchildren lovingly called her Rosa—she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, Elisa Guzman de Garza and Gilberto Garza Hinojosa; her beloved husband of 37 years, Alfonso Mejia, Sr.; her brother, Jesus Garza; and her sister, Elisa Garza.
She is survived by her son, Alfonso Mejia, Jr., and his wife Lillian; her daughters, Teva Mejia, Julia Rangel and her husband Isaac Rangel; her seven grandchildren, Isaac, Ivan, Jillian, Blake, Jeremy, Emily, and Miguel; and her brothers, Gilberto Garza and Marco Garza, and sisters, Regina Robles and Victoria Garza.
