

Sara Lou graduated in 1951 from Indiana State Teachers College, Indiana, PA (now Indiana State University of Pennsylvania) with a degree in Home Economics Education. She was a member of the Phi Mu Fraternity. She taught home economics for one year and then was a home economics representative for the Columbia Gas System in New York and Pennsylvania. From 1955 to 1958, she hosted a live television cooking show called “Heart of the Home” to demonstrate gas appliances to homemakers on WTRF-TV in Wheeling, WV.
In 1959, she married Dr. George Thomas Swisher, Ph.D., and began a new career as a homemaker in 1961 with the birth of their son, Glenn Steven Swisher. Following a move to Houston, TX in 1964 they welcomed their daughter, Sheryl Lynn Swisher Hamm in 1967. Sara Lou was an active volunteer with the kids’ schools and activities. Sara Lou was a proud Aggie Mom with the Houston Texas A&M University Mother’s Club and held several offices on the board as they worked to support the students and university. She was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church for 41 years before moving to Tallahassee, FL in 2007.
She was preceeded in death by her husband of 23 years, Dr. George Thomas Swisher, her mother and father, and her brothers, James (Jim) Albert Glunt and Charles “Buck” Glunt. She is survived by her son, Glenn Steven Swisher (Sandy) and daughter Sheryl Swisher Hamm (Bob) along with grandchildren Tyler Swisher (Mireya), Faith Swisher, Samantha Swisher, Courtney Hamm, Kristen Hamm, and Tanner Dittmar.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday, September 30 at 10 a.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston where she will be buried next to her husband, George.
