Sarah George Fisher left the confines of her earthly body and traveled to her heavenly home on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. Sarah had been in declining health for several years but is now enjoying the fulfillment of her enduring faith for all eternity. Her life was marked by her love for God, her family, and her many friends.
Sarah was born at Heights Hospital in Houston, Texas on January 18, 1951 to Wilcox David and Nora Louise Rudel George. As the baby sister in the family, she was both loved and perturbed by her two older brothers, William and Rodney. There is little doubt that she returned all of their attention in kind. She may have been the youngest sibling, but she was fierce. Sarah was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Rodney. She is survived by her devoted husband Craig Fisher, her sons John Fisher and Zachary Fisher (and wife Audrey), grandchildren Austin Upchurch, Ana Fisher, Alex Fisher, Wyatt Fisher, and Carter Fisher. Her brother, Pastor William George and his wife Carla, their daughter Amanda George, and her son Benjamin will also cherish her memory. A number of other nieces, nephews, and cousins will also recall Sarah fondly.
A lifelong Lutheran, Sarah grew up at Messiah Lutheran Church in Houston. She was confirmed on April 11, 1965 by Pastor Wallace D. Marth. She graduated from Waltrip High School in 1969 where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Imperial Guard Drum and Bugle Corps. Following graduation, Sarah worked in retail sales at Krupp and Tuffley and Foley’s, where she refined her interest in fashion, particularly shoes. She later worked in the oil and gas industry at Aramco and Scurlock Oil, developing her skills in accounting and business administration. This eventually led Sarah to serve as the business manager of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Sarah married the love of her life, Craig Fisher, on June 13, 1987. Prior to their engagement, Craig asked John, Sarah’s son from her previous marriage, for permission to marry his mother. Fortunately, John said yes. The family became complete with Zachary’s birth in October of 1988. Sarah was deeply involved in both of her sons’ activities, supporting John’s interests in music and drama and Zachary’s devotion to all things related to athletics, particularly football, basketball, and soccer. Sarah was a VERY enthusiastic “sports mom”.
As her boys pursued different interests, Sarah continued to support both their academic and extracurricular endeavors. She served as a room mother, team mom, and scout leader, often while working a fulltime job. She also enjoyed substitute teaching at St. Mark Lutheran School and Lutheran High North and was a positive role model to many students.
One of Sarah’s most passionate commitments was to the LWML, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. This organization, founded in 1942, is dedicated to spreading God’s love throughout the world and supporting people’s most basic needs. Sarah was not only an active member, she also served as president of the White Oak Zone in the greater Houston area.
It is difficult to paint a picture of Sarah in a few words on a single page. She had a “big” personality, and it is doubtful that anyone meeting her would soon forget her. She was devoted to her Lord, her family, her friends, and anyone in need. She was indeed a special person, holding onto her faith through many challenges and staying the course when others might have given up. Sarah will forever embody the words of Psalm 16:9 and 11, “Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure. You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
