Sheila J. Rice

Sheila Jean Rice went to be with Jesus on August 27, 2021. She was at home surrounded by family who sang to her, prayed with her, loved on her, and held her as she went peacefully to Heaven. Sheila was born June 27, 1942, in Houston Texas to Leslie Cummings and Mildred Cummings. She grew up in Houston and graduated from Lamar High School in 1960. She went on to Sam Houston State University and graduated with a degree in History in 1964. She moved to Washington DC where she met her loving husband, Richard Rice, before moving back to Houston. Sheila worked for many years as a Cytologist and a Real Estate Agent. She was well respected and made many close friends along the way. Sheila has one daughter, Katherine (Katie) Feather. After the passing of her husband Richard in 1982 she raised Katie as a single mother. She was extremely proud of the accomplishments of her daughter and grandson. She spent the last 10 years of her mother Mildred’s life by her side. They enjoyed watching Astros games together and listening to books on tape.

Sheila joined St. Cuthbert’s Episcopal Church where she served the lord and made lifelong friends. In her later years Sheila enjoyed attending Lakewood church with her family. Sheila was a lover of all pets and passionate about her cats. She was especially fond of 2 cats, Bert and Pepper. She donated to several organizations in Houston for pet rescue groups and the Houston Food Bank. She also enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles and family game night.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Mildred Cummings, her brother Steve Cummings and husband Richard Rice. She is survived by her daughter Kathrine Feather, her grandson Phoenix Feather, her sisters Leslie and Barbara as well as many nieces and nephews that loved her dearly. Sheila made a lasting impression on everyone she met, and her legacy will live on. She will be missed so much but she is in the arms of God who welcomed her home.

A visitation will be held for Sheila Saturday, September 4, 2021, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Pat H Foley & Company, 1200 W 34th St, Houston, TX 77018. The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at Pat H. Foley & Company, 1200 W. 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018. The Committal Service will follow on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079. There will be a Reception following the burial at Clay's Restaurant at 3:00 PM, 17717 Clay Rd, Houston, TX 77084.
