

Steven Ellis James, 79, passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 6, 2014 due to life-threatening injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Friday, April 4. Steve was born on Feb 12, 1935 in Doucette, Texas, but was a resident of Houston since 1951. He was predeceased by his mother, Lois Ellen James, his father, Rayburn Rick James, and his sister, Jane Ellen Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mamie Joyce James; daughter, Joanie LaNelle LaRue, son-in-law, John LaRue, daughter, Melinda Sue James, son, Steven Lee James, daughter-in-law, Katherine James, daughter, Elaine Marie Comets, son-in-law, Jean-Marc Comets, son, Richard Clayton James, daughter-in-law, Kelli James; grandchildren: Jennifer McBroom, Jared LaRue, Jonathan LaRue, Jordan LaRue, Brett Harwell, Chris James, Jessica Armstrong, Jean-Marie Comets, Isabelle Comets, Robert Caauwe, Alex James, Samantha James; great-grandchildren: Scott McBroom, Ashlee McBroom, Jaxson LaRue, Emme Armstrong, Kaylee Jo Armstrong; sisters: Jo Linda Taylor, Carol West, Bonnie Bachelder, Sharon Chapman.
Steve was a graduate of the 1952 senior class of Jeff Davis High School in Houston. He began his career in retail at Weingarten’s and continued at Food Giant. He was a highly-respected man in his community and with everyone who knew him. He served as assistant manager/manager with Randall’s for 22 years until his retirement in 1997. Steve received the Holy Spirit at Gospel Truth United Pentecostal Church under the pastoral leadership of C.E. Lambert in 1955. He served in the capacity of Sunday School teacher, superintendent, and board member/trustee beginning at Faith Tabernacle UPC under the leadership of Forrest H. Ford, at Calvary Tabernacle UPC under the leadership of Pastors Jimmy Shoemake and Jerry Ward, and finally, under the leadership of Bishop Franklin G. Jones, and Pastors Brett Jones and Scott Jones at Grace Church of Humble.
Steve loved life with family and friends and he loved his God, studious in the Holy Word of God. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but Heaven has acquired a new voice full of song, and of love and worship for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
His body will be available for public viewing on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 9 pm at Brookside Funeral Home located at 13747 Eastex Freeway at Lauder Road in Houston, (281) 449-6511.
His home-going will be on Friday, April 11, 10:00 am at Grace Church of Humble, 7224 North Sam Houston Pkwy East in Humble, (281) 441-1111.
Interment will be at Saint’s Rest Cemetery in Nacogdoches at 3:30 pm.
