

Sybil Gdean Scott Southers, of Tomball, Texas, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2025. She was born in San Marcos, Texas on August 26, 1937 to parents Claude Clifton Scott and Marjorie Lou DeViney Scott.
Sybil attended Houston Public Schools and graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 1955. She attended business school and was a keypunch operator for Ford Depot. She met Nick Southers while attending Cashmere Gardens Baptist Church in Houston.
Nick and Sybil were married on November 23, 1957 and they joined Greenwood Village Baptist Church in 1960. She had a dream of teaching history and elementary school and in 1978, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Houston. In 1982, she earned her Master’s Degree in Reading.
Sybil went on to teach in private and public schools for the next 20 years, retiring from Cy-Fair ISD in 2003.
She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas as her ancestor, Peter Segner from Germany came over with Prince Branfel. Sybil was active in the Nacogdoches chapter for several years.
She was also a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, having 3 great-grandfathers who served. One, Alfred Dunning of the Arkansas Unit received the Southern Cross of Honor. One served as a blacksmith for Terry’s Texas Rangers 8th Cavalry, and one was part of a cavalry unit in Mississippi.
Sybil loved to photograph, served as the yearbook sponsor at Greenwood Village Christian School, traveled to the Texas Hill Country in the Spring to photograph bluebonnets, and painted oil paintings after attending classes in Art.
Sybil is preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Marjorie Scott.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 68 years, Nick B. Southers, her daughter Mary Marshall and husband Jimmy, daughter Martha Clark and husband Patrick, grandchildren Lauren Rome and husband Bryan, Adam Marshall, Samantha Culp and husband Bryan, great-grandchildren Jacquelyn and Ethan, Amber, C.J. and Maliah, and great-great grandchildren Raylynn, Royal and Kenley.
