Born to Anna May Kelly and Frank Bennett on August 4, 1927 in Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Verna was one of eight children. At 98 years she outlived her two brothers Bill and Eugene, as well as her five sisters Dorthey, Pat, Jo Ann, Becky and Alice. All who preceded her in death. Verna also braved the loss of her son Jack Jr., daughter Jana Maxine and husband Jack Sidney Corb Sr. She is survived by her sons Charles Max, Alvin Eugene and grandchildren Bryan, Mike, Amy, Ryan, Niki, Sherri, Jon, Larry and Kerry and numerous great grandchildren.
Verna's early childhood included time at DePelchin Faith Home which would later emerge again, playing an important role in her life.
Verna received her education at Houston Aldine H.S. having to drop out and care for her younger sisters.
It was while working as an elevator operator that Verna met Jack Sidney Corb Jr. who later became her husband.
After her marriage to Jack and into the United States Navy they traveled across the U.S. as Jack was transferred.
Together they raised four children: Jack Jr., Charles Max, Alvin Eugene and Jana Maxine. As their natural children grew up and left home... Verna and Jack brought in new recruits from DePelchin Home... enter Bruce and Danny Moore. As years past, numerous other children from DePelchin found love and hope in the Corb household.
Settling in Houston (early 60's) Verna and Jack became charter members of Westbury Baptist Church. Later building a home in N.W. Cypress they became active in First Baptist Church Cypress and later in Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Throughout their lives together Verna and Jack traveled the world serving their Lord. Travels included trips to Israel, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Countless other services were spent serving at the missions in Downtown Houston. Also hosting missionaries on furlough in their home. For years Verna and Jack drove around collecting bread donuts and bakery goods, delivering them to the Joy and Hope mission to be distributed to the needy. Also, teaching Bible and English at the missions. Voluntary Christian Builders, Mission Service Corps, W.M.U., Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School and the list goes on...
A devoted mother and wife Verna spent her life attending thousands of ball games, fishing and camping trips while unselfishly putting her family before herself.
An excellent seamstress she earned extra income sewing filters as well as clothes for her kids. Easily defining her hobby as raising kids firmly and lovingly with emphasis on "because I said so!"
Always keeping herself out of the limelight and putting others before her, Verna crossed the finish line on September 12, 2025, leaving an inspirational legacy for us to follow!
And yes, we had to sit at the table and finish eating those green peas on our plate (which we hated) until they were gone.
If Verna were here today she would want any of you who have not asked Jesus Christ to be your Savior to secure your place in heaven and by doing so join her in Paradise.
What a life Verna lived!
In Mom's final years she loved going to the cattle ranch watching the baby calves grow.
