Feb 8, 1936- Jan 12, 2019
Victor Allen Robertson was born on Feb 8th, 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri. Vic grew up in a musical family and attended school in Houston where he graduated at Spring Branch High School in 1954. He attended the University of Houston until he chose to play using his lifetime love of music. However, with the Korean War conflict going on, Vic was drafted into the army in 1960, and was assigned to an army engineering unit whose purpose was to diffuse and remove land mines.... . However, once the army found out about Vic’s trumpet playing ability, he was quickly assigned to the 7th Army Band until he returned to the states in 1962 and was discharged with honors from the Army Reserves in 1966. And this is where it really started for Vic in following his musical passion. After returning to the states, Vic played in Dance Bands until he met and married his wife of 54 years, Sharon Ruth Robertson, who also grew up in Houston. Vic used his artistic ability to move into the illustrator field and worked for 37 years in that capacity. He had many interests including traveling with Sharon and camping in their Casita for a number of years and dancing to the Big Band music that they loved. Vic joined the Lone Star Symphonic Band in 2004, where he served on the Board and played trumpet as a founding and original member of the Lone Star Dixieland Band and in the Big Band also. Vic has been a tremendous bandmate in these bands, especially in the trumpet section, and also a wonderful friend in this family of musicians.
Vic played in his last concert as a trumpet player in the “Great is the Glory” Christmas concert held on Dec. 16,2018 in Houston, just a month before he passed. He endured a valiant fight for almost 5 years against prostrate cancer and still enjoyed his family, friends and pursuing his love and passion of making music till the end. Vic is survived by his loving wife, Sharon, son,Jeff Robertson of Port Isabel,Texas, and two wonderful granddaughters, Kellyn and Nicole Robertson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Annabelle Robertson, brothers, Warren, Bobby and Doug Robertson. He also leaves behind a sister, Barbara Malone of Magnolia, Texas along with several beloved nieces and nephews.
Vic was a true gentleman and will be missed dearly by his family, friends and community. His legacy will certainly be remembered by his musical family for a very long time. Vic always said that his greatest honor was to have been a member of the Lone Star Symphonic Band and to get to perform with such talented musicians. He felt that he was so blessed to have been associated with the greatest group of trumpet players ever. He said that he would always treasure the friends and mementoes from his years in such a wonderful organization. In remembrance of Vic, his family asked that any donations be made to the LSSB.org. Vic is also to remain honored as a member of the United States Military.
