W. Lin Jones, M.D., noted Houston orthopedic surgeon, passed away on Wednesday, the 24th of January 2024, at the age of 83. Dr. Jones was born on the 27th of December 1940, in Lubbock, Texas to the late W.L. “Dub” and Elouise Appling Jones.
He grew up in Plainview, TX and graduated from McMurry College where he played football under Coach Grant Teaff. In 1968, he graduated from UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at UT/ Hermann Hospital, and then served two years as a Major at Fort Eustis Army Base. Lin became a renowned hip and knee surgeon in Houston, and inspired his son Derek to join him in practice at Memorial Hermann Southwest. He brought the highest standard of skill, care, and compassion to his patients.
Aside from his professional dedication and achievements, Lin is remembered for his sharp mind, witty sense of humor, and most of all: love for his family, friends and co-workers. His charisma and genuine love for people was magnetic. He was also a man of exquisite taste and sartorial splendor – something he shared with his daughter Juli.
Lin loved playing golf and hunting with his friends and family. Dedicated to an active life, he enjoyed running and biking – completing the Houston marathon and the MS 150. He was always up to date on Longhorn, Astros, and Texans news – never missing a chance to dive into sports discussions with his daughter Jana. His hobbies had one thing in common: an opportunity to connect with loved ones.
Following a tragic car accident, Lin and his beloved wife Candy passed away surrounded by their family. Their love and devotion for one another was enduring and inspiring. They were a perfect match and to their last day lived their lives laughing. Both were active members of Grace Presbyterian Church and were rooted in their Faith.
Lin is preceded in death by his wife Candace “Candy” Sauerwein Jones and his parents. He is survived by his son Derek Jones and his wife Lori; two daughters Jana Jones Hopkins and her husband Josh and Juli Jones Japhet, their mother Sandy Jones; and two step-daughters Carrie Gillard and her husband Eric and Rebekah Daniel and her husband Kevin.
He was affectionately called “Bobo” by his 13 grandchildren: Molly, Caroline, and Madeline Jones; Holden, Hayes, and Brinley Hopkins; Daniel & Wells Japhet; Jackson, Carter, and Grace Gillard, and William and McKenna Daniel. He is also survived by his brothers Dr. Stanley Jones and his wife Kathi and Kent Jones and his wife John Ann and 7 nieces and nephews
.
