Wilber James Armatta, 95, of Houston, passed away on Thursday the 12th of September surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. Born on April 12, 1929, in Gobbler Creek Community, 10 miles northwest of El Campo, to the late Frank and Carolina Cook Armatta, Wilber lived a life full of love, hard work, and devotion to those he cared for.
Wilber was a proud partner at Arthur Andersen, where he worked from 8/8/1957 until he retired on 6/30/1991. Throughout his career, he helped and mentored countless colleagues, leaving a lasting impact on those he guided. His career was marked by dedication, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.
Outside of work, Wilber was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He spent 59 wonderful years married to his loving wife, Carlene Armatta. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and friends. They traveled the world extensively together and with close friends.
Wilber served in the Army during the Korean War. Thanks to his experience on the radio in college, he was a part of the Armed Forces Radio, stationed in Honshu, Japan, and given the on-air handle “Honshu Cowboy” due to his Texas roots.
Wilber’s was committed to physical health his entire life. He took up jogging before it was widely known, sometimes drawing amused comments from passersby who would yell, “Stop running, nobody is chasing you anymore!” His passion for tennis also spanned his entire adult life, and he continued to play until the age of 90.
Wilber’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Carlene; his sons Paul and wife Jennifer, and Jason; and his grandchildren Samantha and William, who will always remember their grandfather with love and admiration.
Wilber’s legacy is one of integrity, honesty, and a steadfast commitment to his family and his career. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to those who supported them during Wilber’s final days. Your prayers, love, and sympathy have been greatly appreciated.
Services to honor Wilber’s life will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 10:30 am, with a reception to follow in the Community Center at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Catholic Charities or your favorite charity.
