On February, 2, 2021 Wilbur Lloyd McKeegan, of Hallettsville, Texas, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother passed away from an accidental fall while working on his ranch in Hallettsville at the age of 85. Wilbur was born on April 15, 1935 in Watonga, Oklahoma to Elmer and Violet Martin. He served in the Air Force, was deployed to Korea and honorably discharged after four years of service. He met his future bride, Linda, in his home town of Dalhart, Texas and broke horses to take her on dates. Wilbur and Linda moved to various locations for his construction work until they settled in Houston, Texas and raised three children. Wilbur worked for Brown and Root for many years until he and Linda retired to their land in Hallettsville and ensued the country life with lots of animals affectionately dubbed, Uncle Wilbur’s farm. Throughout Wilbur’s vibrant life he obtained his private pilot license, played golf, drove boats, studied Spanish, played guitar or whatever else Don Housley, a longtime friend, convinced him to try, but his real passion was horses and livestock. He was true cowboy with Native Cheyenne Indian blood. Although his given Indian name was White Rain, some referred to him as Tuffy and others addressed him as Tex. Those who saw his spiritual connection to nature nicknamed him the animal whisperer. No matter what he was called, he was always well respected. He found his salvation while living on the ranch in Hallettsville and loved his Church of Christ community. Wilbur was preceded in death by his mother, Violet Martin; father, Elmer; wife, Linda Payne, and many of his 13 siblings. He is survived by sons, Ricky and Kyle; daughter, Cheyenne; brothers, Gleyn, Albert, and Jimmy; sisters, Oleta Kay, Donna, and Carrol; and close friend of many years, Jo Martin. He is blessed with 5 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held for Wilbur from 9:00 am to 10:00 am on Friday, February 19, 2021 at Advantage Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 am at Advantage Funeral Home, 7010 Chetwood Dr., Houston, Tx 77081. A small private graveside service will be held in Hallettsville, Texas.
