William F. “Bill” Russell, Sr., beloved husband, cherished father and grandfather, and a friend to all, passed away on Friday, the 18th of March 2022 at Houston Methodist West Hospital, with his loved ones close by. He was 90 years of age.
Bill was born in Houston on the 4th of November 1931, to Mary Elizabeth and Lindsey Russell. He attended Southern Methodist University for a short time, before serving in the United States Navy as a third-class Petty Officer. Following his time in the Navy, he married his wife, Louisa Russell and finished his education at University of Houston.
Growing up, Bill learned the car industry from his father, and later joined Russell and Smith Ford serving as a partner throughout most of his very successful career. He credited most of his success to the people that worked alongside him. His son also joined the family business which was passed down through three generations.
Outside of work, he was very active in the St. John the Divine church, where he served as one of the founding members, along with participating on the School Board of Houston. The majority of his free time was also spent doing what he knew best – woodworking. His woodworking projects varied: whether it was building gifts for the church auction, a guitar for a friend or jewelry boxes for his granddaughters, he took pride and joy in everything he built.
Bill was always young at heart, no matter his age. He enjoyed owning a Harley Davison at the age of 70 and went on many road trips with friends. He took pride in the two planes he built from scratch, with wings made completely out of wood, along with the three planes he restored along the way. What initially started as a hobby ended up winning him a Bronze Lindy for Plans Built aircraft at the largest air show in the world for experimental Aircraft, better known as Oshkosh.
Throughout his 90 years, Bill experienced many memories with friends, family, work partners, and even strangers. He impacted many and dedicated everything he did to better serve those around him. His faith was not just the foundation of his life, but the reason behind every choice he made.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Lindsey Russell; his wife of 66 years, Louisa Russell; and his son, William F Russell, Jr. He is survived by his granddaughters, Lindsey, Clara Ann and Mary Grace.
A memorial service and celebration of his life is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 2nd of April, in the Sanctuary of the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Blvd. in Houston, where the Rev.
