William “Bill” Wallingsford passed away on October 11, 2023. Bill was born in Scottsboro, Alabama on April 9, 1944, and his family later relocated to Florida where Bill spent his formative years. After graduating from Vero Beach High School, Bill played minor league baseball and was a professional bowler. During his bowling career, Bill managed to achieve the elusive three hundred game, a perfect score, several times.
As the Vietnam war intensified, Bill signed up and proudly served with the United States Air Force. During his military career, Sergeant Wallingsford was stationed at Lackland AFB (San Antonio, Texas), Laredo AFB (Laredo, Texas), Moody AFB (Valdosta, Georgia) and Da Nang Air Base (Vietnam). He received multiple achievements, including an Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two campaign stars, and the National Defense Service Medal.
During his time in Laredo, Bill was one of the star players for the Laredo AFB Jets, who played in La Liga Mayor de Beizbol (Mexican Baseball League). It was also during this time that Bill met and fell in love with Sylvia Jimenez. The two were married upon his return from Vietnam and settled for a time in Valdosta, Georgia before he was honorably discharged from the military and ultimately relocated to Houston, Texas in 1969.
Soon after arriving in Houston, Bill started his career with the United States Postal Service (USPS). Bill’s first job with the post office was as a clerk, working nights in the mail center at 401 Franklin Street in downtown Houston. Throughout the years and promotions, Bill retired in 2004 as the USPS Business Center Manager. During his career, Bill was lauded for his mentorship, his calm disposition, and his fairness. He truly loved his co-workers and the mission of the postal service.
Outside of work, Bill was an active player and coach for the postal service softball team. The team’s dominant performances were helped by Bill, who once again, was one of the star players on the team. When Bill was not playing softball or bowling with his post office buddies, he loved nothing more than being on a golf course with his friends.
Bill loved attending Astros, Rockets, Oilers, and later the Texans games. At home, the television was always on sports. He was also an avid fan of his childhood baseball team, the Dodgers, and NASCAR, but all this was eclipsed by his love of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama Football was a force of nature in the Wallingsford household. Bill’s children grew up believing that Paul Bear Bryant was only second to God as far as importance in this world and Bill would take his children on a pilgrimage to Tuscaloosa annually to pay homage to the school and the Bear Bryant Museum.
Bill is proceeded in death by parents, Oscar and Verma Wallingsford, his sister Sherry Swinford, and two of his precious children, Rhonda and Ronald Wallingsford. Bill leaves behind a loving and caring family that includes his son Christopher and spouse Ruby Wallingsford of Cypress, Texas; his grandchildren Ava and James Wallingsford; his brother Harold and spouse Gaynell Wallingsford of Scottsboro, Alabama; brother Perry Wallingsford of Scottsboro, Alabama; and brother Ricky and spouse Nell Wallingsford of Scottsboro, Alabama; his sister Brenda Bailey of Scottsboro, Alabama; sister Sandra Knopps of Scottsboro, Alabama; and many wonderful nieces and nephews that loved their Uncle Bill so much.
