Bill was born on December 12, 1946 in Houston, Texas to William Westfall, Sr. and Mary Kate Moore Westfall. Raised in the northeast side of Houston, Bill grew up attending Doverside Baptist Church and participated in more church activities than school activities. Many hours were spent on the church grounds playing basketball, baseball, attending Vacation Bible School, Revivals and many other activities that he fondly reminisced over the years. Bill remembered when James Robison (currently host of Life Today television program and the founder and President of the Christian relief organization Life Outreach International) preached as a guest traveling pastor during one of the Church Revivals.
Bill grew up in a neighborhood with lots of other kids and had a great childhood. He and his brother and best friend Bob would spend hours playing outside, exploring nature and climbing trees, anything their curious and boyish imagination could come up with. His friendship with his brother continued into adulthood as they worked, hunted and fished together. Bill was very detailed oriented and Bob was not; Bill had to think everything through before even starting a trip or project and Bob was “just get it done or let’s go fishing”. Bill would make sure all the food, beverage, extra “stuff”, and he always had a lot of “stuff”, was packed and Bob just made sure he had his fishing pole and bait. Therefore the two of them made a perfect team.
Bill graduated from Sam Houston High School, Fighting Tigers, Class of 1965. Bill and Kathleen attended his 50th class reunion in October 2015 where he was able to catch up with some of his old classmates.
Bill was a Vietnam Veteran serving as a Combat Infantryman, in the US Army (1966 to 1968), Company A 1/11 INF. Honorably discharged, Bill was proud of his time served in the military.
In June 1984 Bill married Kathleen Walker in Katy, Texas. Bill and Kathleen shared many interest but what they both loved most was being at home together and spending time together doing anything or doing nothing at all. They lovingly referred to each other as “Mr. & Mrs. Frank Lee Boring” (frankly boring) as they spent many hours around the house watching nature’s “critters”; the lizards, the frogs, the birds, the Monarch butterflies and bats. Providing food and water for all the critters. Bill’s other love was his girlfriend Spooky, the rescue tortoise shell cat that was his shadow. Bill and Kathleen never had any children but they had many fur babies (cats) over their 32 years together. All of their cats were special and unique and loved like family.
Bill found his love of reading when he was in the 4th grade and continued throughout his life. In February 2015 Bill found a new hobby in cooking. He wanted to help out with some of the household chores and cooking was one of the things that he was physically able to do. He spent hours collecting recipes and compiling them into his own cookbook. He had many great dishes but his chicken pot pie was the best.
He was also an avid bowler until a shoulder injury forced him to give up the sport. During the 80’s Bill was a Director and member of the Houston Bowling Association. Bowling in national tournaments provided Bill and Kathleen the opportunity to take many wonderful trips to different parts of the United States including Reno, Jacksonville, Salt Lake City, Nigeria Falls and many other places. Many lifelong friendships were formed through bowling.
Bill & Kathleen, along with their good friends Bruce & Nylah made many trips to Rockport, TX for Hummingbird Festivals and fishing trips. Every holiday was spent at Bruce & Nylah’s home, enjoying fireworks, good food, board games and friendships.
Bill worked for 40+ years as an acoustical carpenter in commercial construction and was working for Marek Brothers when he became ill in 2013 and was no longer able to work.
Bill was welcomed into Heaven by his parents, his uncle & aunt Tompy & Lucille Moore, Uncle Brookshire Moore, his grandmother - Maw Moore, and a host of other relatives. He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen; his sister and brother-in-law, Betty & Jim Gordon; sister – Becky Kuithe; brother and sister-in-law Bob & Jan Westfall. Also survived by brother-in-law and his wife Jimmie & Debbie Walker; father-in-law Raymond Walker. Nieces and nephews – David Gordon & wife Jackie, Cindy Franklin & husband Joe, Jeff Kuithe, Jennifer Kreuger and husband Hank, Ben Westfall and wife Melanie, and Clint Walker.
