He was born in Franklin, TX on November 16, 1926. William went to Franklin High School. He was married to Gertrude Morgan on November 8, 1946. William had a career in retail sales and management for Foleys, Fal's Shoes, Joske's, Dillards and Brucette's Finer Shoes. He was a member of the American Legion and had a passion for fixing up used cars to sell and gardening. He was survived by his four children, Gloria Young, Bill Whatley Jr., Debbie Bennett and Terry Whatley. Granddaughter Mary Bennett and son in law John Bennett.

A committal service will occur Friday, May 23, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77038.
