June 11, 1939 – February 9, 2026
It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gary L. Bell, who left this world on February 9, 2026, while lovingly surrounded by family in his home in Modesto, California.
Gary was born on June 11, 1939, in Rogers, Arkansas, to Donald James Bell and Dollie Belle Olsen. From an early age, he demonstrated determination, intelligence, and a strong sense of responsibility. He graduated from Modesto High School in 1957, where he excelled academically and was selected for the school’s first Gifted and Talented program.
Gary began working at a very young age, taking on agricultural labor jobs to help support his family. His first career was in the grocery business, where his dedication and strong work ethic carried him from a “box boy” position to store management by the age of 25 with SaveMart Groceries—an accomplishment that reflected his drive and leadership.
In the late 1960s, Gary changed careers and joined his father-in-law at Spencer Driving School. Teaching tens of thousands of people how to drive safely over the years, Gary became known for his gentle spirit, patience, and caring approach, making him an outstanding instructor. In 1980, he assumed ownership of the business, expanding it into a fleet recognized by his trademark red Camaros—an inspired and memorable marketing touch. His services reached communities from Lodi to Merced to Tracy.
Gary also offered specialized driving instruction for students with disabilities, a mission that became especially close to his heart following his remarkable recovery from a severe stroke at the age of 47. His resilience in the face of adversity was a testament to his strength of character. His service to the community was both outstanding and far-reaching, and he was truly a man among men.
Gary was an active member of the Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge and especially cherished the friendships and adventures he shared with the Goodtimers RV Club. He found great joy in automobiles—particularly English sports cars—whether repairing them or racing them. A devoted sports fan and an avid reader, Gary was also famous among family and friends for being an excellent Sunday morning breakfast cook.
His sense of humor, kindness, and positive outlook had a way of putting others at ease, and his presence brought warmth wherever he went.
Gary was preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate of 25 years, Trudy Bell, his parents, and by his sister, Mona Cardera.
He is survived by his siblings Gerald Downs, Yvonne Rowland, and Jack Downs; by his former wife and the mother of his children, Geraldine Bell; by his children Donald Bell, Danny Bell, and Michelle Bell; and by his stepchildren Manuel Chavez, Delinda Chavez Cisneros, and Eric Chavez. He was a proud grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and a cherished great-grandfather to fourteen great-grandchildren.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Gary will be remembered most for the love he had for his family, his unwavering commitment to those he cared for, his gentle demeanor, and his enduring strength. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the family who will forever hold him in their hearts.
