on November 29, 1928.
Prior to earning his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration
at San Jose State College and his Master's Degree at University
of the Pacific in Stockton, he served in the U.S. Merchant Marine
& U.S. Navy. His Navy service was from March 13, 1950 to
December 22, 1953, during the Korean Conflict.
After the service, Jack went to college on the G.I. Bill, knowing that
education was key to a better life. Upon graduating with his bachelor's
degree, he went to work for Owens Illinois Glass Company in
San Francisco. Later he returned to Modesto to go into business.
After the business venture, he started substitute teaching in 1960.
In 1961, was hired as an English Teacher at Downey High School in Modesto.
He worked for the Modesto City Schools as an English Teacher, Counselor,
Work Experience Coordinator, Vice Principal, Community Service Officer.
Then he joined the Ceres Unified School District as Principal of Mae Hensley
Junior High School. He ended his career as a Personnel Director in September, 1990.
After retiring, Jack continued to work part time consulting for Jefferson School
District in Tracy and Jamestown Unified SchoolDistrict. Later he worked part time
as a Counselor at Downey High School, and finally retired for good in the mid 1990's.
Jack spent his career helping people. He counseled many students, sharing his
time to help them determine their goals and plan their future. Jack wanted to help
young people get a good start in life, and he helped them make plans for college
or break into their chosen field. As Principal of Mae Hensley, he strongly believed
in maintaining a fair environment for all students. He made sure students followed
the rules, and quickly stopped anyone who was bullying others. He was a kind man
who could be serious, but who always had an open door. He accepted people for
who they were, regardless of their circumstances or social level.
Anyone could come to him if they needed help, and he offered practical
and sometimes surprisingly unorthodox advice.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Maddux Davis, his daughter, Dianne K. Davis,
and son, Marc P. Davis, and two grandchildren, Alex & Claudia.
