Michael "Mike" Phillips, 71, of La Grange, California, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026. He was born on March 25, 1954 and was raised in Ceres, where school, sports, and neighborhood life helped him build the lifelong friendships he treasured. Mike played basketball in high school and later played softball for many years, forming bonds with teammates who remained close friends long after the games were over.
Mike worked for PG&E as a GC Welder for 30 years, retiring in 2002. He was known for his big presence, his easy laugh, and the way he welcomed people from all walks of life. He had a bit of a tough exterior, but underneath he was kind, generous, and loyal. Once you were Mike's friend, you were his friend for life. He had a way of making people laugh, often without even trying.
He loved the outdoors and spent many of his happiest days fishing, hunting, traveling, and exploring new places. Mike cherished his family deeply — his wife Sheri, his son Derek, his siblings, his grandson Ryder, and Jacob who was part of the family's daily life. He also loved his dog Piper who was always by his side.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents Art and Bertha Phillips, his sisters Judy Scott and Linda Looper, and his beloved dog Ellie.
He is survived by his wife Sheri Phillips, his son Derek Phillips (Ericka), his grandson Ryder Phillips, his brother Max "Skip" Phillips (Marsha), his sister Jeanne Angleton (Fred), and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will forever remember his humor, his loyalty, and the way he made people feel like they belonged.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Lakewood Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe Ave in Hughson, California. The service will take place inside the Heritage Chapel with a reception at the Riverside Hall to follow at the same location.
