Born on January 12, 1939, in Nicaragua to Francisco Calderon and Candelaria Mendieta, Sergio lived an extraordinary life. He was highly intelligent, accomplished, and always thinking several steps ahead. He earned his Doctorate in Law and served as a Major in the Nicaraguan National Guard, accomplishments his family will always remember with pride.
But to those who loved him most, Sergio was so much more than his accomplishments.
He was a devoted husband to Myriam Calderon, his wife of 63 years and the love of his life. The life they built together, the family they created, and the love they shared were among his greatest treasures. His devotion to his wife and family could be seen in everything he did.
Sergio was the loving father of Sandra Calderon, who preceded him in death; Sergio Calderon Jr.; Silvio Calderon, who preceded him in death; and Soraya Calderon; as well as Siara Calderon.
He was also a loving and proud grandfather to Ceaser Calderon-Leyva, Alexandra Calderon, Alyssa Calderon, Sylvia Calderon, and Sergio Calderon III.
Sergio had a heart of gold. He was the kind of man who would help anyone he could and was always there to offer advice, guidance, and wisdom. He had a special way of making the people around him feel loved and cared for. One of the many things his family will fondly remember is his habit of giving everyone their own special nickname, a small reflection of the warmth and affection he carried for those closest to him.
His family will miss his stories and advice, his incredibly sweet smile, and especially his hugs—the kind that made you feel safe, comforted, and deeply loved.
Sergio found joy in spending time with his family, going out to eat, traveling, and simply being surrounded by the people he loved. It was these moments together, both big and small, that became some of his family’s most treasured memories.
His faith was an important part of his life. Sergio loved going to church and had a deep devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. His faith accompanied him throughout his life and was a source of strength and comfort.
Sergio’s absence leaves an enormous space in the lives of those who loved him. There will be moments when his family wishes they could ask him one more question, hear one more piece of advice, see his sweet smile, or have just one more of his hugs.
But the love Sergio gave so freely did not leave with him. It remains in his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and every person fortunate enough to have been loved by him. His wisdom will continue to guide his family, his stories will continue to be told, and the love he created will continue from one generation to the next.
Sergio was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed. His family will carry his love, his wisdom, and his memory in their hearts always.
May Our Lady of Mount Carmel cover him with her mantle, and may Sergio rest eternally in the peace and love of the Lord.
