Thirel Gene Jackson was born on December 17, 1933, in McDougal, Arkansas. He was the eldest of five children born to Walter and Essie Jackson. As farm workers during the depression, the family moved first to Roundtree, Illinois in the late 30’s and later settled in Porterville, California. As a young man, “Jack” as he liked to be called, left home and joined the Navy. He was based in Stockton, CA, and there he met and married his wife of 68 years, Colleen Wyman Jackson. His first son, Stephen, was born while Jack was serving overseas in Hong Kong. Later two more sons followed, Douglas and Ron. After his Navy service ended, Jack began a long career with United Parcel Service. The family moved to Modesto and soon Jack was able to purchase an almond orchard and pursue the life of a hard-working gentleman farmer. His other passion was flying, and after obtaining his private pilot’s license he purchased his own Cessna for family trips and outings. Jack was a giving and gregarious friend, always ready to lend a hand, sing a song, and fire up the BBQ (literally). His health may have slowed him down a bit in later years, but that ready smile and warm handshake never faded. Jack passed away on October 18, 2021, in Manteca, CA. He is survived by his wife Colleen, sons Douglas (Kim), and Ron (Kim), and grandchildren Mitchell (Kate), Kaylie (Zach) and Luke. Jack will be missed dearly by all who knew him.
