Oh my sweet Uncle Eddie, we love you so much, you and and Ella Mae.  I have so many memories of you, my daddy and Uncle Alfred Vara. I remember all the summer vacations to Acuna, Mexico and staying at Los Alpes hotel.  Yall used to set up tables around the swimming pool and let us swim all day and all night while yall danced and had some cold beers.  After my daddy passed, you filled his shoes.  You were so very well respected and loved.  I love you so much and I love looking at you.....you look exactly like my dad. Martha, Rudy and I, thank you for all the great times, all the parties at your house,  the gifts at Christmas and the jackets that you gave to my boys.  

You are truely ONE OF A KIND and will be greatly missed. 

Thank you for all the memories and Thank you for serving our country.

RIP EDDIE G VARA 11-18-1925 4-1-2011
Dad-its only been 24 hrs since u left us 2 b w/the luv of ur life, mom, in heaven...i keep waiting 4 u 2 walk thru the back door, 2 hear u talk back 2 the policitians on TV, 2 ask us 2 take u 2 Home Depot....We all sat on the back patio u luved so much and toasted to u...Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, Friend....I LOVE U DAD U WILL B MISSED!!

     A person that has had a profound impact on my life is my grandfather.  His name is Eddie Guedea Vara.    He is 86 years young and has lived his life to the fullest.  He retired at 75 years old as a foreman cement finisher.  He was married 63 years to the love of his life.  I am one of his eight grandchildren.  Most of my life lessons have come from my grandfather who teaches by example.  Stories he has shared with me and my cousins made a huge impact on me and changed me in many ways.
     If I’ve learned anything from him it’s definitely courage.   He was in the navy from eighteen years old until he was twenty-six years old.  One of my favorite stories is about the time he was in the navy on a ship.  In the middle of the night the whole crew woke to hear the roar of a category four hurricane.   The captain ordered seaman after seaman to pull the rafters down.  The only way to do this was to climb to the top of the crow’s nest of the ship.  Each man refused.   The ship continued to rock violently from side to side.  When the captain came face to face with my grandfather…there was no hesitation.  He was the only one that was brave enough to go up there.
      Another great thing I’ve learned from my grandfather is making lasting friendships. His best friend was an awesome man named Frank Alvarado.  They were friends for over sixty years; they would call each other almost every day, even though they were hard of hearing, yelling to each other “WHAT DID YOU SAY?”.  He would always say “you have to be a friend to have a friend”.  He is well liked by anyone who crosses his path.     
      My grandfather believes that we all have a responsibility to give back to the community.  For example, he is part of the Old Timers Club of Houston.  The members consist of the people he grew up with in his neighborhood and went to school with.   They organize fundraisers which raise thousands of dollars for under privileged kids who can’t afford to pay their way through college and provide them scholarships which give them the opportunity to have an education.   Most of the recipients would otherwise remain in a life of poverty.
      My Grandfather always had one dream which was to be a professional boxer.   He started training at a very young age.  He was already being lined up for matches at the community gym.  However, his life took a turn and he was drafted into the Navy.  At first he thought his boxing dream was over.  He decided not to let any obstacles get in his way and  joined the boxing team in the navy which soon built his reputation back of being a boxer.    He was very successful.  He met a lot of famous boxers.   To this day he tells me stories and shows me old pictures and title belts from his boxing days in the navy. He and I watch boxing matches on the weekend.  
      Finally, he taught me through example about commitment.  A level of commitment not many people get to experience. This commitment was to my grandmother, they celebrated their 63rd anniversary July 3rd of this year.  I have great memories of them always being together, having fun, and travelling.    They had a lot of friends and knew how to enjoy life. My grandmother was diagnosed with stage 4 uterus cancer in February 2010.  She became very ill and she passed away July 15, 2010.   She was unable to walk, feed or even bathe herself.  He took care of her day and night.
    I consider myself very blessed to have a grandfather that I look up to and respect and is a part of my daily life.

Eddie G Vara was the best grandpa you could ever have.


I remember when I was 5 he would take me to the donut shop.  He would get a long john I would get a crème filled and grandma would get a coconut one.


I was always so happy when he took me to the army store.  He bought me a navy hat and army suit and guns


When grandpa would always babysit me we would always sit outside and make a big fire and he would drink bud lite.


I remember he always used to take me on the riding lawn mower and I would help him cut the grass.  I was only three and I would sit on his lap and he would let me drive.


Grandpa was the best story teller in the whole world he told me and all my cousins how when he was in the Navy he would get on the 2 millimeter guns and shoot planes….


Grandpa we all love you and will miss you and take care of grandma and tell her hi….
