Our beloved, Flor Estela Hernandez (age 55), entered the presence of our Lord on the morning of May 30, 2025. Flor was born to Felix (deceased) and Rosita Sanchez on January 9, 1970, in Brownsville, Texas, and lived her entire life in Houston, Texas.
Flor is survived by her husband, Jose Luis Hernandez, of 37 years. They met at McDonald’s, where they both worked during their high school years. Her three children also survive her: Denise Elizabeth Hernandez, son Jose Luis Hernandez, Jr. (Kylee), and daughter Vanessa Hernandez, as well as grandchildren Andrew, Emily, Isabelle, Cameron, and bonus grandchildren Christopher and Aaliyah. As well as by her four sisters, Nora Elia Rodriguez (Leroy), Rosa Ysela Orozco (Omar), Maria Ester Pena (Richard), and Nancy Flores (Charles), and numerous nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
With hard work and dedication, Flor achieved her Bachelor of Science (Cum Laude) in 2014 from Sam Houston University. She was highly proud of that milestone in her life. She taught in the field of special education for seven years and was an advocate for children with special challenges. Teaching was a passion for Flor, and she was saddened when she could no longer educate the next generation.
Our fond memories of Flor included her delicious cooking, which featured dishes such as menudo, empanadas, and her famous Mexican rice. At one point in her life, she found a passion in cake decorating. The family enjoyed the fruits of her labor, devouring each slice of her cakes. Flor was an avid reader, specifically spiritual books. One book she suggested was “Choose Joy” and encouraged us to seek resources for spiritual growth; once, she said, “We cannot stay babies forever if we want to share Christ’s love.” Preach it, Flo!
Additionally, Flor loved vacationing with her family in Pensacola, FL. She loved spending time at the beach, playing with her grandkids. Furthermore, Flor enjoyed spending time with her sisters, going on trips, shopping, or having dinner (especially at Saltgrass Steak House). When the Sanchez girls (also known as the Golden Girls) got together, there were always happy tears and continuous laughter due to their shenanigans.
Flor was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and grandmother. She was loved by anyone who knew her and had a kind heart, never judging anyone but instead praying for them even when they didn’t know it. Flor had such a strong faith in our Lord and had a special calling from her early years, fulfilling a generational prayer that her great-grandmother prophesied for all her descendants. Her continued devotion to Christ led her to the Dwelling Place Church, where her faith was truly strengthened and grew in the Lord. She faithfully attended women’s conferences and special events with her family.
Flor is preceded in death by her father, Felix Sanchez, and her nephew, Michael Martinez.
Flor will be missed dearly by so many. She was a shining star to all who knew her. Her life was too short, but she is now in her heavenly home. We look forward to seeing her again. Save us a spot, Flo Flo!
