

Oris Cornelia Benton, age 92, was born to Judge Douglas Smith and Katurrah Bell Smith in Emerson, Arkansas on February 17th, 1930. Surrounded by her family, she transitioned peacefully early morning on March 15th, 2022.
Oris was a graduate of Walker High School. Oris played basketball throughout her high school years and was an avid watcher of the NBA. Not long after graduating, Oris moved from Emerson, Arkansas to Flint, Michigan.
Oris met and married George W. Benton, and to this union 5 children were born: Barry, Duane, Gordon, Stephen and Stephanie. Oris began her career as a Youth Specialist with the State of Michigan’s juvenile corrections facility. A position in which she’d retired from after 40 years of dedication. In her free time, Oris enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. She also loved a good game of gin and fishing with her sister Jannette. Oris was a member of the cooking club of America. Her love was evident in every recipe and her cooking will be missed.
Oris received salvation and was a dedicated member of her church homes, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church (Flint, MI) and Fallbrook Baptist Church (Houston, TX). Oris was passionate about affecting the most positive change in life.
She was preceded in death by her Mother Katurrah Smith, her father Judge Smith, Brother; Loy (Smitty) Smith. Sisters; Lula Teil, Geneva Cutwrite, Lillie (Lil Sis) Franklin, and Minnie Wilson, Niece, Deborah Ann Dunn, Grandchildren, Barry Lynn Blake Benton, Colton Enriquez, Kirstie Atkins and lifetime best friend Floyda Dixon.
Oris is survived by her sister, Easter Jannette Simpson of Las Vegas, NV. She leaves her legacy of 5 children: 4 sons: Barry (Mitzi) Benton of Houston, TX, Duane Benton of Flint, MI, Gordon Benton of Houston, TX, Stephen (DeKieshea) Benton of Houston, TX, and 1 daughter Stephanie Theresa Benton Olorunfunmi of Houston, TX. She also leaves to cherish 10 grandchildren; Twyla (James) Kearney, Latoya (Jamal) Vaughn, Damion (Nicole) Wheatfall, Donnie Huntsman, Stephen (Tamara) Benton, Lauren (Joseph) Joubert, Tracie Atkins, Katurah Atkins, Alexus Benton, and Blair (Annie) Benton. 21 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews including sons and daughters in love: Larry Wilson (nephew), LaShawn Wilson (nephew), Corey Wilson (nephew), Corliss Annette Dunn Gains (niece), Patreycia (Nene) Martin (niece), Corliss (Tooney) Anthony (great niece), and Deborah Blake.
A visitation for Oris will be held Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Calvary Hill Funeral Home, 21723 Aldine-Westfield Road, Humble, TX 77338. A funeral service will occur Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 21723 Aldine-Westfield Road, Humble, TX 77338. A committal service will occur Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Calvary Hill Cemetery, 21723 Aldine-Westfield Road, Humble, TX 77338.
