David L. Tyler, 79 of Huntington, passed away Sunday evening January 1, 2023, at his residence after a short battle with cancer. Dave was a fifth generation Funeral Director, serving Indiana families for over 55 years, Dave’s family had a combined 160 years of Funeral Service. Dave had worked at several firms over the years. He started at Geisen F.H. in Gary, then at Shawley F.H. in Marion and then moved to Huntington in 1973 where he finished up his career over the next 47 years. Dave worked for Deal & Robbins F.H. from ’73 – ’94 and then at Myers Funeral Home from ’94 – 2020. He was a 1962 graduate of Angola High school and 1964 graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science. Dave was especially proud when he received his 50-year service pin from the Indiana Funeral Directors Association in 2014. Dave had served in many community capacities over the years. He was past President of the Huntington Jaycees, past Board of Directors of Huntington County Baseball, Salvation Army, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters. Dave was a 30 + year member of the Huntington Moose Lodge #837. Dave was born on December 24, 1943, in Kendallville, the son of James (Toby) and Margaret Berhalter Tyler. He was united in marriage to Peggy Sue Barker on August 31, 2001, in Huntington. Peggy survives. Additional survivors include a son: Todd (Sharon) Tyler of Long Beach, CA; a daughter: Tammy (Jeff) Chambers of Milan, OH; three grandsons: David Tyler, Nathan (Katie) Chambers and Nick (Morgan) Chambers; a great granddaughter; Mahle Chambers; a sister: Alice (Jack) Holopeter of WA and a brother-in-law: Jim Penn of Kalamazoo, MI. His bonus family consists of three daughters: Tina (Chris) Rhodes of Auburn, Delena (John) Twibell of Hartford City and Chris (Kenny Leavitt) Barker of Huntington. Six grandchildren: Cassie (Clint) Frank, Chelsie (Tyler) Bundrick, Payton (Sam) Yarian, Briana (Todd) Baker, Chase (Amanda) Twibell and Easton Rhodes; 6 great grandchildren: Kinleigh, Kalinn, Palmer, Brody, Scout and Wrenlee. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Mary Penn. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2023, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, Indiana. A Memorial service will be held on Monday, January 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. Memorial donations can be made to the Cancer Services of Huntington County, or the Salvation Army sent in care of Myers Funeral Home, 2901 Guilford Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
