She was born in the Bronx, NY, the daughter of the late James and Rose Holmes. Growing up, Barbara and her family spent summers on Cape Cod and at the age of 18 she and her family moved to the Cape and became fulltime residents.
Barbara’s passion was helping the community. She worked for DARE and Mentor, Inc. for several years and was awarded, on numerous occasions, ‘Mentor of the Year’. She was deeply embedded and would advocate for people who could not advocate for themselves, help others who could not read or write, help people find housing and assist in writing grants to benefit the community. She was also a foster mother who helped and empowered several children in the Cape Cod Community to learn, grow and thrive.
Some of Barbara’s favorite things were reading, especially mysteries, playing cards, backgammon, cribbage and going on long car rides with friends. Her special moments were hanging outside at family and friend barbeque gatherings while secretly soaking up the sun.
Barbara loved her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly. She will be missed by all the lives she touched.
In addition to her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her sister, Sharon Fernandes. She is survived by her loving sons Curtis Holmes, Anthony Adams, David Adams, Andrew Adams, Jeremy Costa and Robert Perry; her adored grandchildren Cheyanne Holmes, Daniel Sylvester, Marcus Garner, Adriana Holmes, David Adams Jr., Ava Rose, Messiah Adams and Kingsley Adams; her cherished great-grandchildren Marlee Sylvester, Omari Ribeiro and Ezra Ribeiro; and dear niece Laura Fernandes and nephews Jamie Fernandes and Michael Fernandes.
Family and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, February 2nd from 4-6 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames, 160 West Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
