Christina Lowell Brazelton

On August 11, 2015, Christina Lowell Brazelton died peacefully at home in Barnstable, Massachusetts, from natural causes. Christina, known to friends and family as Chrissy, was married to Thomas Berry Brazelton for 66 years and lived in Cambridge and Barnstable.

She was born in Boston on May 2, 1921, to Catherine Bowles and Alfred Putnam Lowell. The youngest of three daughters, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances Hunsaker and Beatrice Magruder. She attended Winsor School and graduated from Radcliffe College in 1946. She worked at Coward McCann Publishing in New York City before her marriage to Berry in 1949. She became his secretary and lifelong career coach. She was a director of many boards, including the Home for Little Wanderers, Shady Hill School, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. She was a collector of antiques and contemporary art and ran a gallery in Cambridge with Betsy Van Buren and Jerry Cutting specializing in new contemporary artists.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas Berry Brazelton, her children, Catherine Bowles Brazelton, Pauline Battle Brazelton, Christina Lowell Brazelton, Thomas Berry Brazelton III, and her grandchildren.

Services will be held on August 22 at 11:00 am at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Route 6A in Barnstable, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sturgis Library, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Barnstable, or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Berry -

I only recently learned of Chrissy's passing. I am so very sorry. She was such a wonderful friend to all of us who passed through the unit and your home. She always expressed such interest and concern about our kids, and we appreciated it greatly.

I hope to be able to make it up to Boston sometime soon. Maybe I can spirit you away for lunch with Mary Anne and me? Have a good Christmas with the family. Best - Alex

What a spirit! What a life! We didn't know one another but I knew of Christina as a legend in the Boston art world, an inspiration.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the heartache you and your family are feeling. I remember the first time I met Chrissy in your home in Cambridge. She was so gracious and lovely. She made everyone feel like they were each special and important. I will remember her as a woman of great poise, generosity and spirit.
