

Dorothy was born in Malden, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Davis G. Maraspin and Dorothy (Howe) Maraspin. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1940 and from Massachusetts State College (now the University of Massachusetts at Amherst) in 1944, where she majored in Economics. In July 1944, she entered the United States Navy as an Officer. She remained in the Navy and made it her career, attaining the rank of Commander, the highest rank a woman could achieve at that time. She retired from the U.S Navy in 1966, while working at the Pentagon.
On April 19, 1969 she married Philip W. Vetterling and resided in McLean, Virginia. In 1975, she moved to Barnstable from McLean, VA. She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, serving on the Alter Guild for many years. She was also a volunteer at Cape Cod Hospital from 1975 – 1990. During her years on the Cape, she pursued her interests of knitting, reading and crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter Karen Sue (Vetterling) Foley and her husband Vince Foley of S. Burlington, VT.; 2 grandchildren Allyson Foley and Jason Foley and 1 great-grandchild, Olivia Rose McGrath. She is also survived by one sister, Anne (Maraspin) Kittredge and her husband James Kittredge of Greenfield, MA and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband Philip W. Vetterling on February 24, 2010 and by a sister Sally (Maraspin) Marchard in 2001 and her husband Richard Marchand in 2007.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Rosewood Manor for the compassionate care Mom received over the last month and also Estelle Trycinski for being such a wonderful caring friend and companion.
A funeral service will be held Friday, January 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 3055 Main Street, Barnstable MA. Burial will follow in Lothrop Hill Cemetery, Barnstable MA.
