

She was born in Thibodaux , Louisiana on November 15, 1931 to the late Reverend Chester P. Joseph and the late Louise Harris. She grew up in Johnson Ridge and attended Catholic School where she became a local basketball player known as “Sussy” to her community. Elizabeth continued her education and attended college in San Antonia, TX where she still played basketball under the direction of the late Father John and was then known as “Smiles” on the court. While she loved basketball she also loved helping people and studied nursing in college. Nursing brought her to the East Coast in the 1950’s and she did her intern @ the Shattuck in Boston, Massachusetts where she met her husband, the late Warren Henry Stanley, Sr.
Elizabeth and Warren married in the 1950’s and they began their family and lived in Glenridge, New Jersey as she continued her nursing career in the Maternity Ward @ Mountainside Hospital before moving to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1969. She resided in Mashpee and worked @ Falmouth Nursing Home for over 30 years. Elizabeth became a pillar to her community and served on the board of the Martin Luther King Jr. Society – Cape Cod Center where she dedicated herself to non-violent philosophies and pledged to work with the center to achieve “MLK’s” dream. Like him she also had a Dream! In 1997 Elizabeth received the “Community Award” from the N.A.A.C.P – Cape Cod Branch and unbeknownst to Elizabeth, Rachel Devaney who 20 years later would become a close friend / caregiver received the same award that day for the “Youth Community Award” showing her that good people find a way to cross your path in life.
Elizabeth was a woman of Catholic faith who enjoyed life and would often travel to Bermuda and back home to Louisiana. She loved her family and enjoyed basketball, dominoes, and scrabble. She was a die-hard Celtics fan win or lose!
Elizabeth was the oldest sibling and predeceased to: Willie Harris, Annamae Harris, Alvin Joseph, Sn, Chester Joseph Jr, Elisa Joseph, and Melvin Joseph. She is survived by her brother Ike Joseph and his wife Viola of Thibodaux, LA and her sister Lilian Joseph of Thibodaux, LA along with her closest cousins Brenda Woods & her children Russel Avery and Tiny & Richard Adams all of Thibodaux, LA. In addition, Elizabeth leaves behind her son Warren Henry Stanley, Jr. and his companion Ann Gomes of Mashpee, her daughter Vanessa Marie Stanley-deBarros and her husband Roland Kenneth deBarros, Sn of Medford, MA, along with her grandchildren Juarez Stanley, Danisha Marie Stanley, Shaylene Alisha Stanley, Elizabeth Ann Stanley, Racquel Alexis deBarros, Neivya Sophia deBarros and the late Roland Kenneth deBarros, Jr and the late Mallory Stanley all of Massachusetts along with 14 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
