Ernie served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army’s 4th Armored Division. On Christmas Eve 1943, while stationed in Texas, he married the love of his life, Midge, shortly before he was deployed to Europe during WWII. After the war, they moved to Cape Cod and raised their family.
For several years, he worked for Kraft Foods and A&P Supermarkets. In 1957 Ernie was appointed United States Postmaster of Centerville and held that position for nearly 30 years. His commitment to the community he loved, saw him also hold the role of a volunteer fireman for the Centerville Fire Department for many years and he was a long-standing member of the Lions Club.
Those that knew Ernie will always remember his kind soul and gentle manner. He was a great cribbage player, taking on any challenger! He loved the Red Sox and Patriots; and in his later years he kept in touch with family and friends the old fashioned way…....He wrote letters!
Ernie is predeceased by his wife Midge in 2010 and his son Jim in 2014. He is survived by his son Jon & wife Joan Whitman of Centerville; daughters Linda Tevlin & fiancé Bob Ieva of Florida; Jill & husband Peter Kahelin of Centerville, Beth & husband Barry Jennings of Florida, and daughter-in-law Glenda Whitman of Barnstable. He was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his warmth made him a Grampa to more than just kin. He was especially close to his Grandson James Whitman who became his primary care giver and good friend in the last few years of his life, and the family is eternally grateful for Jim’s love, sacrifice and commitment to his Grandfather.
