George F. Dietel Jr. passed away peacefully on July 5th, 2025, just three weeks shy of his 99th birthday, in West Yarmouth, MA. Born in Boston on July 24th, 1926, he grew up in West Roxbury where he enjoyed playing baseball at Billings Field and swimming at Lake Winthrop in Holliston. He enlisted in the US Army in 1944 at the age of 18, completed basic training at Ft. McLellan before shipping out for the Philippines, where he was wounded in combat in May 1945, earning the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He returned from The War to meet and marry the love of his life, Audrey. They built a home in Needham, MA and raised seven children. After the Blizzard of 1978, George sold his successful insurance business and moved many of the family to Scottsdale, Arizona where he worked for the US Post Office up until his retirement. After a brief stay with family in North Carolina, George built his final home in Centerville, MA, near the shores of Shallow Pond. It was the site of many wonderful family gatherings, especially for many grandchildren. A life-long avid Boston Sport Fan, George would cheer on every Boston team from his “man cave” in the basement but always welcomed interruptions to play games like Cribbage, Sequence, and Five Crowns upon request. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 75 years, Audrey, his seven children Paul, Janis (Bill) Curtis, Ellen, Caron (David) Hood, Mark (Julia), John (Cheryl), and Rob (Kelly). He is also survived by many grandchildren: Kristen (Bryan) Grady, Matt Curtis, Stephen (Amanda) Curtis, Bryan (Tricia) Curtis, Sean Curtis, Jason (Kate) Hood, Dan (Amanda) Hood, Bronwyn Wrobel, Jeff (Julie) Dietel, Kevin Dietel, Elizabeth Dietel, and Charlie and Andy Dietel, and his great grandchildren Yofiel Wrobel, Cam and Evie Curtis, Dakota Hood. George had a wonderful saying that can be summed up as “well we had a lot of fun!”
A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, MA on Tuesday, July 15th at 11:00am followed by private burial at Massachusetts National Cemetery.
