Gerald, “Jerry”, was born in Hopedale, MA on January 25, 1935, to Donald and Hattie (Barr) Hazard.
Jerry was married to the love of his life, Anne (Tacconi) Hazard, for 67 years and together they raised their family in Barnstable, MA. He is survived by his five children, Brian (Vicky) Hazard, Stephen Hazard, Lisa Hazard, Gerald “Jed” Hazard Jr, Seth (Kristina) Hazard; his eleven grandchildren, Jenny (Ed) Lemery, Joe Hazard, Adam (Amber) Hazard, Tyler Hazard, Lauren (Joel) Bissonnette, Michael (Emily) Ozzella, Matthew Ozzella, Whitney Hazard, Gerald “Jeddy” Hazard III, Quinton Hazard, Claire Hazard, and his four great-grandchildren, Reia Lemery, Oliva Ozzella, Theodore Ozzella, and Eliza Bissonnette. He is also survived by his brother Ronald Hazard. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his brother David Hazard.
Jerry graduated from Hopedale High School in 1953. He went on to graduate from Northeastern University and then completed his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine in 1962. He fulfilled his pediatric residencies at Boston Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Afterwards, he moved with his wife Anne and children to Cape Cod where he felt he could make a difference in the community as a pediatrician.
Jerry, or Dr. Hazard, proudly opened Hyannis Pediatric Group in Barnstable in 1965 and was an esteemed pediatrician on the Cape for many decades to thousands of patients. He taught classes at Cape Cod Community College and Harvard Medical School at MGH and published numerous papers in medical journals. He also served as Chief of Medical Staff at Cape Cod Hospital.
Dr. Hazard was a man of many talents. He was an avid skier in the mountains of New England and Europe. He loved to travel with Anne – their favorite destinations were Italy, Anguilla, and their wilderness camp in Vermont. He was a talented watercolor painter, and his paintings were often featured at Sturgis library. His grandchildren affectionately called him “poppop”. He enjoyed having a glass of wine with his loved ones, spending time outdoors, especially hunting and camping in the woods of Vermont and Maine, and walking his Boykin Spaniels.
It’s impossible to put everything that he was into an obituary, because he was in fact so many things. He was a husband, father, poppop, doctor, and friend. We will all miss him so much, but we are at peace knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife Anne.
A service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Barnstable Village, on Saturday January 25, 2025 at 10:00am. Burial to follow will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry’s family requests that donations be made to Sturgis Library.
