I am so sad to hear of Gerry's passing. He was a special person.  I am so honored to have known him.  Even though we lived miles away from each other he was a friend and mentor.  Absolutely one of the best bosses I have ever had.  I am going to miss him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to  Gerry's family as I am saddened to hear of his passing today.  I worked for Gerry for many years in Banking SAS. He mentored me in the industry and owe all my success to him. As I sit here reading  the different condolences posted here from family and friends I realize that Gerry was not only a good boss but a person as well. Fly high Gerry, the world is a better place because of you.

To Family,
In March of 2011,I was a jr in high school and  was introduced to Gerald by Kirsten Malloy. Gerald hired me to work for him at the barn and over the course of 18 months I learned so much, not just about being a farm hand and work but also about life. Working for Gerald was not an easy task, you see, Gerald was a perfectionist in all tasks and me being a naive teenager just wanted to get the job done and go home. Gerald had other plans, and when you didn’t do what he told you to do then he made it known. Some times it didn’t make sense to me but what I learned was to “Just do it!” From trying to round up the two donkeys to hanging up surveillance cameras around the house and planting hundreds of new trees after he had cut down hundreds, there was always work to be done. Some of the best experiences I had while working at the farm was talking to Gerald and hearing his stories, which I throughly enjoyed. There was always something to learn from him and I can honestly say he gave some pretty good advice about things. He never sugar coated things either and told it like it was which was really meaningful to a young guy. Gerald and I had many conversations about his military service which was very intriguing to me because I had chose to enlist in the Marine Corps after high school. When Gerald found out that I had enlisted, he would always say things like, “if you can’t do things right here how you going to make it with the big boys in the Marines” and “ohhhh boy, wait until those instructors get a hold of you.” At the farm, I learned so much about myself, I learned about life, hard work, sacrifices, and most importantly, “doing things right the first time so you don’t have to do it over”. I learned all of that and more from Gerald. To say he had an impact on my life is an understatement because a lot of the things he taught me I still carry with me to this day and you don’t get that a lot from people anymore.

Gerry was a lifelong family friend of my parents who I first met as a young child and quickly became someone I looked up to. 

There are so many adventures we all shared like the annual dad and daughter camping trips, first time experiences of eating freshly caught frog legs, driving his old jeep sitting on my dad’s lap or us girls being left behind in a spooky cemetery while he and my dad went into town for steaks and beer. We sailed on a schooner for multiple days sleeping under the stars, flew in a small Cessna airplane, and hiked steep mountains while I whined the entire way and the haunted stories he read to us under the moonlight are such core memories I truly cherish. These shared experiences ultimately led to my love for the wilderness, hiking long distances (without whining) and my adventurous spirit. 

I’m so grateful that Gerry and I reconnected just a few years ago discovering a new relationship with me as an adult, sharing our current journeys through this thing we call life. 

I hope you and my dad are sharing a beer under the stars and rejoicing in lives well lived. 🌟💕

Boy oh boy, where do I begin to find the words to describe someone who has meant so much to me. Anyone who has ever met my Pupu is overcomer with laughter and joy.

As a kid, I looked forward to coming up to see my Pupu! I enjoyed riding horses and going skiing; my love for animals stemmed from him and the exposure he helped me have access to. I started riding horses because of my Pupu, and it made saying goodbye to a sport I loved so much when I left for college so hard. From this experience, I grew as a leader.

From the time I was young, we had a little war between one another. For my birthday you gifted me a baboon with a bare butt and I didn’t like that his butt was showing so Tutu covered his butt with a makeshift plastic grocery bag and then all of a sudden after dinner he went missing. This started a war between us and how the Monkey Barn became a thing, along with the Bone Lady in the Basement, who hung herself and her sister Rita.

Fun Fact: Before my Pupu had his bone marrow transplant, he was able to eat sushi, and he had me try it, and to this day, sushi is my favorite food. There are a lot of foods that he had me try that I still eat now. 

Yesterday, there was a double rainbow, and if you knew my Pupu, then you knew he was a fashionable person. There was a double rainbow at my University, Western Carolina in Cullowhee, NC, and I just know that was him who painted the rainbow to show off that he will always be flamboyant in all the beautiful things that remind me of him.

My Pupu taught me what resilience looks like and taught me to really go after the things that are most important to me and to fully live life to the fullest! My Pupu and I were similar in so many ways; he truly brought out the best in me and created so many wonderful opportunities for me.  I will continue on his legacy of repeating "clear, clear, clear" to let the driver know that there aren't any cars coming, and that they can take the turn. I will always love you, Pupu!
