Jean Marie Griffin (Scaro) passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James T. Griffin, her brother, Robert C. Scaro, and her son-in-law, Thomas R. Brennan.
Born on May 19, 1937, Jean was the eldest of three children, growing up with her brothers, Bob and John. Her life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and family.
One glorious summer day, destiny played its hand when Jean met her soulmate, Jim Griffin. Jim, cruising by in a convertible with his friends, Joe DiPietro, Pierrino DiMascio, and Nino Federico, spotted two radiant young women—a brunette, Jean, and her vivacious redheaded friend, Carol Pierce (Sprague). With a playful honk and whistle, the young men invited the ladies out for ice cream—and from that serendipitous moment, a beautiful love story began.
About a year later, Jim asked for Jean’s hand in marriage, and they were united on October 12, 1957. Their journey together began in Dorchester, where they joyfully welcomed their children—James P. Griffin, Diane M. Munsell (David), Robert G. Griffin (Brona), and Lisa A. Brennan (the late Tom Brennan). Later, they settled in Braintree, where an unexpected blessing arrived in 1970 with the birth of their youngest, “little Jeannie,” Jeanne Tuthill (Richard).
Jean managed the household in Braintree with grace while Jim built the family business, Griffin Avionics, in Hyannis. He often commuted by plane from Norwood Airport to Hyannis, returning home late in the evenings to his devoted wife and children.
Jean’s adventurous spirit shone brightly. Though she initially feared flying with Jim—worrying she wouldn’t know how to land the plane if something went wrong—she faced that fear head-on. At the age of 40, she earned her pilot’s license and proudly joined The Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots dedicated to education, scholarships, and a shared passion for flight.
In 1978, Jean and Jim built their forever home on Cape Cod, and several years later Jean joined Jim as Vice President of Griffin Avionics, a role she was very proud to hold.
Over the years, their family continued to grow as they welcomed sons- and daughters-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren—each one bringing joy and pride to Jean’s heart. She also leaves behind her brother, John F. Scaro (Joanne), her sister-in-law, Pat Scaro, her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her dearest friend, Connie DiPietro and family.
Jean’s passions, besides flying and family gatherings, included boating to Sandy Neck, socializing, dancing, and dining with friends at her favorite Barnstable spots—The Dolphin, The Mattakeese Wharf, The Barnstable Tuscan Cuisine, and the Buttercup Cafe. She loved thrift shopping and could never pass up a good bargain! Always impeccably dressed, she carried herself with effortless style and a radiant smile.
Jean’s life was a testament to courage, devotion, and the pursuit of dreams. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and laughter that will forever live on in all who were fortunate to know her.
A wake will be held at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, West Main Street, Hyannis, on Sunday, November 9th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Church on Monday, November 10th, at 10:30 AM. Interment will immediately follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, where Jean will rest beside her beloved Jim.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots Scholarship Fund or The Aero Club of New England Scholarship Fund in Jean’s memory.
The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to Cindy Mancini, RN Case Manager, Karen Weaver, Home Health Aide, and the dedicated team at VNA Hospice of Cape Cod for their exceptional and compassionate care over the past six months.
