WEST YARMOUTH, MA – John Kostas Karras, 89, died peacefully Dec. 18th 2017 at Mayflower Place Nursing Facility where he received loving care by the amazing nurses and staff.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris (Ellis) with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. She was the Love of his Life.
He and Dot raised 7 children in their home on Rt. 6A in Yarmouth Port. He is survived by
Anna Willoughby and her husband Gary from Stow, Maine - Kostas Karras and partner Debbie
Nadeau from Fryeburg, Maine - Elaine Wilkey and her husband Ed from Fryeburg, Maine -Bonnie Karras and her husband Mike Bosetti from East Harwich - Brenda Preston and
partner Stephen Norton of West Dennis - Steve Karras and wife Cheri from Yarmouth Port and Jean Andrews and her husband David from Fryeburg, Maine.
He also has 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren from Fryeburg, Maine and Cape Cod.
John was one of 10 children, Petrus Karras, Mary Montagna and Ted Karras, the late George
Karras, Louis Karras, James Karras, Peter Karras, Paul Karras and sister, Pauline Ginn.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
John and his siblings were raised in Barnstable Village in a home that is currently known as The Dolphin Restaurant.
He was the son of the late Anna (Wilde) Karras of Germany and the late Kostas George Karras
from Greece.
In his early years, John tuna fished commercially from Barnstable Harbor. These were some of
his most memorable years. He then joined the Army and served during the Korean War. After
returning home, he began working for Meyers Furniture which led to him opening his own business of Carpets of Cape Cod and Continental Furniture. In addition to this business, he was
a land developer and gentleman farmer, purchasing Taylor Bray Farm and surrounding acreage in Yarmouth Port.
In his retirement he enjoyed building birdhouses, following his local Boston sports including
his beloved Red Sox. He also enjoyed his later years at White Island Pond amongst many
friends and neighbors.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 W. Main St., Hyannis, from 4 p.m to 7 p.m. A celebration funeral of his life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames. Burial will be at Chandler Gray Cemetery in West Yarmouth.
