
Born in Philadelphia on August 9, 1912 to Mary Allen Smith and Benjamin Holl Rowland, Jack attended Andover Academy and Harvard University.
In 1936 he was named to the United States Olympic field hockey team traveling to Berlin.
During World War II he designed and tested air conditioning systems for Allied submarines. After the war he joined Hayden Stone & Co. in Boston in order to satisfy his life-long passion for investments.
In 1940 he married Dorothy Wheeler of Lexington. They made their homes in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts and Naples, Florida. Their summers were spent in Osterville where he retired in 1984.
Jack was an active member of the Oyster Harbors Club, Hole-in-the-Wall in Naples, Fla., but most especially the Wianno Golf Club where he played his last match this past March.
Jack was well loved by both family and community members. His humor, ready smile and sparkling eyes earned him the nickname “Ivories and eyeballs". He is survived by his son John B. Rowland Jr., his daughter Susan R. Chollet of Peterborough, N. H.; his grandchildren Christopher R. Chollet of Austin, Texas; Charles T. Rowland of Centerville, Rebecca B. Chollet of White River Junction, Vermont; Jessica R. Hazelton of Los Angeles, California; Julia C. Rowland of Cambridge, one great grandchild Finn Hazelton, and many nieces and nephews.
A private interment service will be followed by a reception at the Wianno Club, Osterville, Massachusetts on August 9th at 4 PM.
