Marilyn Ruth (Hatcher) Asiaf, 81, of Centerville, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, August 23, 2019. She was born and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston by her late parents Louis and Ruth (Crawford) Hatcher. She was the loving wife of Joseph Richard Asiaf, MD, with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 7th. Marilyn attended the prestigious preparatory school, Girls’ Latin, now known as the Boston Latin School. From there, she went on to graduate in 1960 from the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing in Boston. In addition to her devoted husband Doctor Joseph, Marilyn is survived by her children, Victoria (husband Thomas) Goodrick, Joseph Richard Asiaf, Jr. and Jennifer (husband Randy) Bern; her grandchildren Jennifer (husband Timothy) Shaughnessy, Hannah Goodrick, Grant Goodrick, Emily Asiaf, Joseph Richard Asiaf III, Charlotte Bern, Nicholas Bern, Ryan Bern; and her sisters, Janet (husband A.J.) Veneto and Marie Carrio. She is predeceased by her sister Barbara Hatcher.

As a young bride she left Boston and worked to help support their growing family while Joseph was in medical school in New Jersey and during his internship in Worcester, Massachusetts. Her nursing jobs included the Cardiac Unit at the Margaret Hague Hospital in New Jersey; St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester; Kent County Hospital in Rhode Island; Massachusetts General and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Massachusetts where she served as a Head Nurse. When Joseph was drafted into the Navy, she set up successive homes in Rhode Island, New York and Virginia. The family then settled in Dedham, Massachusetts and she spent summers at her home in Kennebunk, Maine. She helped establish their medical practice in Brockton, Massachusetts, and moved to Cape Cod 34 years ago.

She was a gifted hostess, honing her skills serving as President of the Wive’s Club at the Norfolk Naval Station. She loved reading, music, art and traveled the world. Marilyn was active in her community. She was an engaged member of both Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of the Assumption Parishes Women’s Guild. She supported arts and charities including the Centerville Library, Cape Cod Symphony, and Cape Cod Hospital. She was a Lay Franciscan and also served as a Eucharistic Minister.

She was the true matriarch of her family, and especially her 8 grandchildren. She took her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to heart. Her generosity is legendary to everyone she encountered.

Aunt Mal was one of the most loving and caring woman I have held dear to my heart. She was always there to not only to sit and listen but to also give you her advice to lead you to make the right decision. She was sharp and to the point without missing a cue. She had so many qualities about her and always showed it in all she said or did. She loved her family dearly. I will miss such a classy lady! Love you, Mary Obrien
